  • Race chassis welding

I would like the latest, greatest book on the art of chassis welding. Andy, do you or anyone else have any suggestions on a publication of this kind? I am extremely interested in ALL the finer aspects of the NASCAR style chassis and its different variations. Thanks again everyone for your info and advice.

There is a book called "Performance Welding" by Richard Finch that does a pretty good job of covering the topic. Beware though; it is a book and there are some flaws in some detailed descriptions of some processes and terminology but it is worth a read. Good Luck, JEFF

Thanks Jeff, I'm familiar with this book. Paged through a friend's copy a while back. Are there any others that come to mind?

        Revlimit,

I saw a few chassis books the other day when I was at Summit Racing Equipment but don't know the titles, authors or publishers right off hand. HP Books should have something and Petersen Publications should also have something along the line you're looking for. I'm sure if you search the internet you're bound to turn up something.

Thanks Blondie, I have found some publications on the net, but I wanted to see if anyone knew of one that stood out from the rest. Good luck with the neck, and thanks for the reply. Rev

            Rev,
Don't know off hand any pubs with the latest and greatest welding techniques for chassis fab. We just grow into the style that suits us and our fab needs. If you want to take a trip to Charlotte, I'll bring you in to some of my teams that build chassis or some chassis builders I work with.

Check out "Engineer to Win" by Carrol Smith. It has a lot of really good information about the materials and metallurgy that you'd definitely want to know about. It probably isn't so much about welding technique, but it does have a lot of good information for a weldor. It does get fairly techinical, and I'm still absorbing some of the info.

"Chassis Engineering" by Herb Adams is also a good read. It's not the definitive source, but it has a lot of good info in a readable format.

I got a book called "Aircraft Welding" by L.S. Elzea that is more of a techinque book. It was written in 1942, so it focuses on O/A technology, but it has plenty of design info that would apply to other processes. It's out of print, but Lindsay Publications offers it from time to time.

None of these is exactly what you seem to be looking for, but they're definitely related and worthwhile. What you want to do seems to be a combination of things. There's welding technique, design, materials, etc., so I think you're going to need to get your info from a variety of sources.

INTP ..thanks. Carroll Smith's books are unbelievably thorough. He had been involved in racing for 60 years? I think. He died a year and a half ago if I'm right. The man was ahead of his time. You're right, the book doesn't include welding technique. What I'm really interested in are all the intricacies of welding a truly top notch NASCAR style chassis.
