Yeah, well why not see what we can do? This has already helped me post a few photographs because I know what I can aim for.

I think the reason the above screen still looks decent at that resolution is because there are large areas of the same color which JPEG can easily compress. So screen captures of most software layouts and whatnot will have that advantage.

    aphexafx,

That's not too bad. I prefer to browse AIS off in IE. For those who may not know the Automatic Image Resizing option is found by navigating this route while in Internet Explorer: TOOLS-INTERNET OPTIONS-ADVANCED-MULTIMEDIA-Enable Automatic Image Resizing.

    aphexafx,

Thanks for taking time to investigate. It is always fun to think what if and then see if it can be done within the constraints given. Again I apologize for 'jacking a good thread.

I know I was thinking you (or anyone...rb455ho originally) could just take a screen shot of a CAD drawing that you wanted to show on the board and then see how it looked after you reduced it with your program.

But, here is one I captured at 1600x1200 and then sized down to 1024x768 that doesn't look as bad as I though it would. It's a straight screen capture into Photoshop, JPEG'd to just below 100Kb and it's legible enough. So this probably isn't as big of a problem as it first seemed.

Like HAWK said, sorry 'bout hijacking the thread, Boss!

Edit: I just wanted to add that many of you probably have the Automatic Image Resizing option turned on in IE, and this will scale images down for display when you view them in IE if they are larger than the window. This will reduce the detail in the image but is only really a problem for line drawings.

    aphexafx,

Miller is listening. It is probably not going to happen. The extra 60bk per file would really add up over a time period considering the number of attachments posted. Therefore, space being a consideration, a couple of options would come to light: Increase the amount of drive space for the site-probably not an option due to financial constraints. See older posts deleted to free up drive space-not a good option for those browsing or using the search feature.

Maybe we will come up with a better idea to dump the 1024x768 files into a highly legible package in a100kb file. I like could set up a new server to host members attachments, but that is not really a solution. We need to figure it out on this site.

It's just an image I had on hand with detail in it. Yes it was originally going to be in a post about grinding, like, months ago.

Your reduced image does look good, fun4now. I wonder how well it would work for a line illustration, like a CAD drawing. Have any you could try?

what are you showing us is 1 preground and 1 done on a bench grinder?

just for fun i cut your pic in 1/2 and it still looks great
just set it up for a 800X600 screen

Well to get this image under 100Kb I had to compress it quite a lot and as a result the image has degraded bit. However I still would have been able to make my point with it. It's only 1024x555, though, so for now I guess if you have a large illustration, just try to decrease it's width or height, if possible, and you can then use less compression.

HAWK, I agree that 100Kb is just too small. If they would up the limit enough to where we could post a 1024x768 JPEG with little compression everything would be great. Beyond your ideas I don't know of any way to squeeze more quality into a 1024x768 JPEG and keep it under 100Kb! millermotorsports.com, are you listening? There aren't that many images uploaded here, couldn't you even let us have 200Kb?

Teeps, if the situation allows for cropping then that's a good idea. But we're using 1024x768 as a ~standard~ of sorts and trying to get a quality, sharp, image of that size posted here. This way if the need for a full 1024x768 arises we would know that we could post it and have it be legible. Of course, anything smaller than that could be posted legibly as well.

I took a picture of two tungstens that I was going to post here once but never did. It's close up that needs to be kept sharp (as in minimal compression), so I'm going to play with it here for a few minutes and see how large of an image I can get it while still being able to post it. BRB...

Try selecting what you want to copy in autocad, then ctrl c and ctrl v into powerpoint, then save the powerpoint presentation as .jpg.
It helps if you go tool/options/display/color to set the background to white in autocad
In powerpoint you can add text and arrows if you need.

When you do a sceen print I don't think that compresses very well. Try ctrl, alt, prt screen to capture just the active window. Also cropping out the toolbars will help cut down the file size.

Have you guys tried the crop function?

I take super high quality shots with my cam, 1200x1600 or larger, but I very seldom need the the entire shot, I may like having the great resolution, but I may only need the 70% of the center of the whole shot.

So through many different windows included, or aftermarket software packages, you can then use the hashed-line box, with the left mouse button held to hi-light exactly which part of the image you want to keep. Then using the crop function, your new image becomes only what you highlighted, and of course less resolution, and less size, but still a very good shot.

Then usually the resolution size is still rediculously large, so I change the pixel size down to the 500 range, (it automatically keeps correct aspect ratio). Sometimes it is still too big, and either I make it smaller, or compress it.

But make sure you have changed it to a jpg instead of a bmp, this makes a HUGE difference.

Fun4now, just hit the print screen button,
    go to start/run/ type mspaint
    ctrl-v (paste)

or some like to use word, or paintshop to paste into.

it resizes to fit screen sizes so the pic stays clear but the kb go down. it gives thease options

    small(fits 640X480 screen)
    med.(800X600 screen)
    larg(1024X768 screen)
    hand held pc (240X320)

this pic started at 379kb i reduced it by the med. setting and got a clear coppy at 26.6KB and verry clear.

just for fun i used the hand held pc option and it reduced to 4.37 not so clear but waaaaay small

well you can see the results below

    aphexafx,

Try pasting a screen shot of your jpeg and my jpeg into MS paint. Magnify to 2x and 6x. What do you think? There has to be a better way???
