Hmm. Interesting point. I suppose one might also wonder why a home shop guy might NEED (and spend a minimum of $2200) a 200DX
owww oowww
i can anser that 1.
power ishues is why i need the dyn200DX. a syncro180 would work but i cant feed it the needed 60amp's the dynasty will give me 200Amps with only a 30amp draw. i would love to put the extra $1000.00 diferance into a few cool tools but i have to go dynasty for power reasons.
that being said i'm shoure the dyn200 will meet all my needs and i should not out grow it.
thanks for the help
......or..........
hope i helped

Fun,
I know that is your case. I was mostly speaking to my perception of silliness in GWB's original post. It seems silly to me that a home shop guy that could afford to spend more than $2200 to get his welder and set ups would worry about spending $200 on a Sharpie tungsten grinder.

i get it.
my only real concern is weather it is realy that important to have the tip just right? it seems that close is good enough so getting a tung. grinding setup is realy just about saving time where time is $$$$$$$ so for a home shop it realy isent needed.
that seems to be the general concensis as i understand it.

I walk through an electronics store and wonder why anyone would WANT to spend 14000 dollars on a television....is it up to me to decide if they really NEED it...Nope. It's important to evaluate want vs need as an individual and not worry about the other guys. If I had to explain a NEED for all the junk in my shop then I'd be in deep trouble!
The WIG 10/175 is a bench mounted Tungsten Electrode Grinder which can be used to grind and cut to length tungsten electrodes. The WIG 10/175 use a collet to clamp the electrode, this collet is then located in a holder and the collet is then rotated as the tungsten is introduced to the grinding wheel via a precision slide system. The WIG 10/175 us a bonded diamond impregnated grinding wheel gives exceptional life.
The Sharp Shooter uses an innovative tungsten grinding system to provide accuracy and safety in a compact, yet heavy-duty unit. Its unique design reduces the skill required to allow for easy grinding, flatting, and cutting in an enclosed work area. Vacuum system options are available with HEPA filters in a quality work cabinet.
Turbo-4 Tungsten Grinder is a capable, economical tungsten grinder. It allows for grinding and flatting of tungsten electrodes. Its enclosed work area protects fingers from accidents, lungs from harmful dust, and eyes from sparks

that being said most people dont need a perfect grind, some verry specilized welds will but most wont.
i think like the plasma cutters, the tung. grinders are becoming more populare due to availability and price. i dont need a plasma cutter especily when you concider i have an O/A torch with cut and weld tips, yet i do have a plasma cutter. seems the tung. grinder falls in the same mold. and now that the sharpie is available for only $200.00 less than 10% of the welder caust i would tend to think it too will become more popular and indispencible.
although i have come to realize i will not need 1 i am shoure that i will save up in the hopes of some day having 1. why you ask. well mostly cuz it's out there.

IMO it depends on whether you have a bench grinder or not. If you don't have a bench grinder why buy the bench grinder to sharpen tungsten when you have to dedicate one wheel just for that purpose because even a cheep bench grinder is about $50.

So KB, sorry you thought this was a silly question...............
So do you cut wood in the same same shop you weld in???
Sorry that was silly....
A tig welder(weldor) that can't hand grind a tungsten, is like a machinist that can't grind a lathe tool by hand... .useless.... We don't do AEROSPEC in a home shop setting...........
A good investor spends his money wisely..............
You mean there is actually a market for these things? I never would have guessed it. Ha ha, just kidding.
I actually checked out the Turbo 4. It seems comparable to the PII in terms of size and functionality. Ultimately, I agree with HAWK when it comes to the Diamond Ground products. They remind me of Miller when it comes to product quality and customer service.

I've ground my tungs by hand on a bench grinder for years. Yes I do know how to do that. It works fine, absolutely. My business, however is growing by leaps and bounds. It's not because I can't do it, its because I would rather be welding than worrying about grinding my tungs and dealing with dressing a wheel, cleaning up the mess, etc, etc, etc.
My original point to your original post was, What does it matter whether these guys want to spend whatever on whatever? If a TG grinder is what you want, get it . If you don't want one, or feel the need, then by all means refrain.
A Miller Dynasty 200DX is an incredible machine technologically. If a home shop guy/gal is going to buy that kind of welder, then why would it be such a leap for him/her to get the latest technology in in tungsten grinders?
I did not mean to offend you and my response was probably a little sarcastic. It was meant to be sarcastic but not to offend you. I apologize.
