Econotig

Hi everybody. This is my first post so here is my question. My wife wants to buy me a new welder and I was thinking about the Econotig. It will just be used for playing in the garage building anything that comes to mind. Could anyone give me some pros and cons on this unit or should I be extra nice to her and go for a bigger unit? She just got me the BWE for Christmas and now a new welder so I am on a roll So if you could give me some info I would appreciate it.

step up to the syncro 180 or the p.t. 185......the ecno is going to run ya around 1350.00 and the syncro is a few hundred more.......

i gota agree with the dawg.
sweet talk her out of another $100 or so if you can and step up to a unit that will take care of any home project ideals and last ya a life time.
the econo tig i think is realy a entry level lerner unit that most out grow prity quick unless you are just doing artsy stuff. as a home shop unit you would do better to start with a syncro 180. i would have gone with 1 but cant get enough power to my shed/shop so i'm saving for the dyn.200 but thats a hole different $$$$$$$ range. the syncro 180 is a great unit with lots of true lovers/owners.
you should be real happy with it(syncro180) and when you out grow it you will be starting a welding shop.

10-4 unless you really are tight on the $$, the Sync 180 is far better for little extra money.

If you don't need to do aluminum you might concider a Maxstar 150STL or STH. Esp. if you are amperage deprived like I am

I had an Econotig for one year. Good to learn on but soon I needed more adjustability re: low amps. But I only paid $350 for it. I too looked at the Syncro 180 and Dynasty 200. Went with a Thermal Arc 185, priced just a little more than the Syncro and less than the Dynasty with almost all the bells and whistles.

econotig or syn 180

I would definitely go with the syn 180 or pt185 the econotig as everyone has said you will soon outgrow. I am pretty sure the econotig does not have any balance control so you are limited in adjustability regarding aluminum. I have a syn 180 and have welded 1/4" 6061-T6 aluminum with no problem. Obviously, with very limited duty cycles. I got a syn 350 for the shop and now use the 180 at home great machine.

Enjoy whichever one you purchase!!

I agree with the rest, if aluminum is not on the horizon get the Maxstar. If it is get the Syncrowave or the Thermal Arc.

Hey guys thanks for the info. Talked to the wife at supper tonight and it looks like it will be the 180 . I knew this would be the right place to get my question answered. I will let you all know when it arrives. Thanks again and Happy Holidays
