It's not a good idea to let it freeze. The lens is darkened by liquid that is electrified to make it expand filling the entire lens not just the little parts it's stored in.
Formerly living in Minnesota I've seen a couple cracked after the first freeze. don't know what temp that fluid freezes at but if it's going to be below 32 I'd bring it in the house.

You know, I totally forgot about them freezing. It got down to 19 the other day. My shop didn't go below 40, though. With another front on the way, I had better remember to bring 'em in this time. It is supposed to be colder, longer this time. I can usually keep the shop above 34 or so with a single 500w quartz light. Ain't it great to be down south sometimes???

                ofical word from Miller

miller just anserd me so here is what they have to say.
                and thanks again

Thank you for purchasing one of the Miller auto darkening welding
                helmets.

In regards to your question about exposing our auto-darkening welding
                helmets to cold temperatures.

The operating temperatures of our Miller auto-darkening welding helmets
                are
14 degree to 131 degree Fahrenheit (-10 degree to +55 degree Celsius)

Exposing most battery devices in cold temperatures will lessen the life
                of the battery

Since there are replaceable batteries that operate the Miller
                auto-darkening lens
I would recommend that the helmet is stored inside a heated area to
prolong the life of the battery. And that the helmet is above the 14
degree operating temperature before being used.

To view our auto-darkening welding helmet product line, with
                descriptions and specifications

it seems Millers only concern was for the batterys. so it looks like we all got a lil too worried about it.
i dont mind having to get a new battery (if i had to ) just glad to hear that the battery is the only real concern. I'll keep mine in the house with me just cuz it looks good in the living room on top of the TV. reminding me my safe place is out there if i need it. (mom's in the 1st trymester so she is a lil testy at times )
                        thanks for the help

It was in the single digits last evening and that puts my insulated but unheated shop at 33 degrees. I leave my hoods out with the welders except for the BWE since I really hate fitting into the cold head gear and don't like the early morning fog from a frozen hood nest to my face, but the shop never dips below 25 even in sub-zero temps which is not often here in East Tennessee.

I wish my jackson EQC were as good with the cold as it appears the miller BWE are. I am on the third shade (warranty replacements) and am convinced the 40 degrees temps in the garage have killed it both times. At least they stand by their product, but i sure wish i could weld in the semi-cold without fear of having to send it back in again.
