  • I need advise on my Syncrowave 300.

I bought a Miller Syncrowave 300 from a Virginia State auction. I have the orginial Owner's manual and I am slowly reading through it. I was told by the previous owner/shop forman that the welder did not work. (He did not say what was wrong, only that the department decided that it was cheeper to replace the machine than to put more money in a thirty year old machine.)

Currently the machine only has the foot control. (No hoses, torches, stinger, grounding gear.)

Please give me your opinion what to do next.

Should I go and buy or make up lengths of welding cables and try to stick weld with it? Should I pack it up and take it to my Authorized on site Miller service center and ask them to test the machine?

    Thank you!

It surely would'nt hurt to have someone check it out for you.
I would make up some cables and give it a shot first.
If it dont work at least you'll have some cables for when you get one that does.

I oersonally would bring to get checked. And if cheap enough get repaired before sinking any cash into an otherwise worthles machine. How much did you pay for that?(if you dont mind telling of course)

I doubt that it will be something major. You should be able to download a manual. That was a very good price.

Actually, if you can get it working without spending too much you might have gotten a great deal! If you get it working... But a couple hundred bucks for a 300A TIG machine is a steal! If you get it working...

Does it have the pulse controls, like wendell's?

Have it checked out and see what they say. It could be something simple, y'know? If you're up to it and you have a multi-meter you could probably troubleshoot it pretty thoroughly yourself, or have a technician do it, but either way it's probably worth it to see if you can get it to run.

            Good luck!!

Thats a **** of a price and if it doesnt cost much more than 800 to fix you got yourself an excelant tig machine for under 1000. Which there is something to be said about that- some people could only dream of finding a deal like that.

                Pulse controls?

I think that it does, but I'll have to check that on that! I have the original 1975 owner's manual at home some where. (I think that my wife put it away for me somewhere!) I have downloaded and printed a September 1887, Form: OM-350P owner's manual and the Miller "Safety Quick-Guide for Arc Welding and Cutting the Safe way!" from this web site!

I called Arcet Equipment Company here in Richmond. They are listed on this web site as an Authorized Miller sales and service dealer. I talked with service technician, Jim Alley. I explained how I got the welder and asked if I loaded it up and brought it to Arcet, if he could test the welder for me. Jim explained that he did not think that very much could be wrong. He has seen a couple of High Frequency control relay failures over the years with this type of machine. He says that the relay contacts fuse together sometimes and perhaps the circuit board will have to be replaced as Miller does not sell the relay seperately.

The machine is clean and in good condition. I took one of the side panels off and looked inside. There is no evidence of any damage so far. I hope to have some time over the Christmas/New Year holidays to do a little more poking around with a multimeter and a flash light!

I'll have a 735 pound door stop if this welder is not repairable.

                  No pulse

I took a second look at my Miller 300 Syncrowave. It does not have the pulse control after all!

I was pretty busy this week end. I ended up getting a really deal on a engine hoist at Northern Tool this week end. I bought a floor display model for one hundred dollars. I needed it to lift the welder up on to my pick up truck. The only problem now is: I have to wait until after Christmas! My wife says that the hoist is my Christmas gift and I can not "play" with it until Christmas. Besides she needs lots of help moving the furniture, and decorating the house for Christmas!

A friend also brought me a ten foot section of rusty 2" angle iron. I am going to make a four wheel dolly for the Miller 300 Syncrowave using the angle iron and four steel swivel casters that I also bought from Northern Tool..

Yep, you guessed it! The casters are another Christmas gift too!

I guess that I might as well get some more Christmas decorations down from the attic! The next thing you know, that rusty piece of angle iron will be yet another Christmas gift!

                      Moving the furniture is

not too bad. It is all of the junk that we have in the furniture as well! The entertainment center had a hundred thousand wires and jumper cables between the t.v., vcr, dvd, stereo, cd disk player, antenna...you name it! Then there were all of the books, videos, cds, photo albums and nick knacks. That was just the e. center.

You can't just move the furniture. You have to clean all of the dust and junk that has collected under it too! Then there were the arguments about where to put my recliner! Where to put her recliner! Where to put the Christmas tree! Bah Humbug!

I swear to you the cold damp garage is looking better to me all of the time!
