  • Dewalt Metal Saw

After viewing previous posts on saws I thought I would share my experience with the Dewalt 14" Metal Cutting Saw (DW872) w/ Metal Blade. I have been using this saw for about 2 years on & off and am very happy with it... other then the miter fence. I know what your thinking "The blades are so expensive!!" and yes you they are (range from $90 -130) I got a free extra blade with the original purchase. But if you are looking for a clean cut, I think this is a good solution for the price -$430. I have used the fiber blades in the past and I was disappointed on how the blade wondered so I went and purchased this saw (I guess the woodworking influenced this...). Some of the work I did in the past required some exact measurements and this saw came through. The fence configuration could of been a better design as the work piece may slightly move after it is clamped and setting angles takes a little more work then it should. All in all I think it's a good buy. I hope this may help in making some decisions down the road.

Now I just need to find one of those old Powermatic Wood/Metal bandsaws!

Agree with you 100%, Chris. I use the carbide blade for angle work and abrasive for straight cuts. The new Milwaukee unit has a much nicer base over the Dewalt. Just as the Rigid abrasive over the Dewalt. I went with Rigid over Dewalt on the abrasive unit .
By the way Chris have you jumped on that Spectrum 375 yet?

          Terence,
I have cut steel pipe with it in the past but not SCH 40 AL. I think it's max capacity is 5", I have to check the specs.

                Hi guys,
I wasn't sure if I should jump in on this or not.I picked up a DeWalt carbide tipped saw today for my Brother in law. It works very nice. MUCH! better then my Rigid carbon wheeled saw. But with that said It's not my band saw. My brother in law didn't want to pay $1000.00 for the band saw so he opted for the cold saw. I don't think he will be unhappy. I use my saw almost daily and I'm very happy with the band saw. If your looking at a saw to help productivety I think a GOOD band saw is the way to go. I don't intend to offend anyone that has a cold saw but a good and well maintained band saw is hard to beat.

                  Bulldog,
No offense taken at all...constructive criticism is always a +++ I was actually considering a band saw before I purchased the cold saw and I was talked out of it! so this brings me to some questions: What's your recomendation.. Horizonatal or vertical and how easy would it be to cut a miter on say a 6' of angle? The guy that talked me out of the bandsaw said the cut isn't clean and the cold saw would do a much better job. I think I have cut 1 piece of metal on a band saw in the past and that was it so Im looking for some ideas. I still would like to get a band saw even though I have the coldsaw as mentioned in a earlier post, an old Powermatic wood/metal would be nice!

It cuts schedule 40 pipe great. I cut up about 2000' of it so far for my corral. If te pipe is really rusty it tends to dull the blade though. BTW blades can be sharpened, so don't let the blade cost deter you.

Well all I can say I have used cheap band saws and I would have to say a hacksaw would do about the same job. Anyway I've used a few carbide tipped chop saws and they work great. The more money that ya spend the better they seem to work... Go figure. It's the same with band saws. If ya buy a good one you get good cuts. I like the ability to cut vert or horz. I would not trade my band saw for a chop saw but I probably could find room in my shop for one...

We have one of those old Powermatic wood/metal saws. Nice saw, 95" blade assortment not that great. Still trying to get the boss to sell it to me

I also have the Dewalt Multicutter, and the fence and the base are junk on it. The blade however works great, extremely clean cuts. Also, the blade can be sharpened, for around $20, 3 or 4 times.

I was lucky enough to buy mine when Harbor Freight was selling them as referbs for $179. I also got the extra blade.

No way would I suggest a person pay over $200 for one when there are other saws out there in the same price range that not only have an equivalent 14" blade, but a base and fence system that works right!

It still is leaps and bounds better than an abrasive chop saw, and I have learned to compensate for the fence so it's not an issue anymore.

*uh oh* I'm not lurking any longer .....
