Need welder Info.

Andy or whichever expert:

I bought an Miller M-80P welder today 20-180 amp ac arc welder. Serial # J162452. I was wondering if someone could identify the age of this thing (and where I can an owners manual, if there is one), i know that's it's heavy, but that's about it, I probably won't have a chance to fire it up for a week or so.

I am sure there is a manual for it on the miller site but you'll probably have to pay for it since the unit is old and they dont store all their manuals in PDF on their site.

Please double check the serial number it doesn't fly on the manuals look-up. Also check it for any other ID plate name or product name. I looked from top to bottom of the miller list and could find no similar product numbers.

that IS the proper serial number for that vintage of machine. It was built in 1960. Most likely in March. We went to a 2 letter serial number system starting in 1973.
From your picture, it looks like in ggod shape.

Thanks to all for the help. I hope it runs well, I paid $80 for it and the anvil pictured. I need to chase down some leads for this thing, is their anything special I should know about them?

The male connection for the leads is a tapered brass piece that should be available from any good Miller dealer. They were used on lightweight and industrial machines back then. Either #2 or #4 cable will work, but just for grins I would go with #2.

More than 20 years ago I read that anvils went for $1.00/pound. I have heard that the good old ones are selling for much more than that in Texas. The only two I have were made from rail, one from a light gauge track and the other from old Southern Pacific main line.

That anvil weighs atleast 100 pounds, probably more. welder weighed a ton too, had to get help unloading the thing.

I got a great deal when you consider i was visiting a bud on thursday and he gave me 50' of 2awg wire with a stinger and another 50' of 1awg wire that's too big for me to use right now. The extension cord is really the only thing that's cost me so far
