  • 3035...maybe premature, but...

    !Alors, mon amis! (HUH?)

    Decided to take the 3035 for a little ride today, but all I had was .024 hard wire. I loaded it, but it feeds in a pulse-kinda manner - - go OK, pause, go OK, pause???? I figure this is due to the .024 on the .030 drive rolls, but the run - skip thing worrys me. I do notice that if I release the drive tension and pull the trigger, it's all good sounding. Anyone else tried this? Am I way ahead of myself here? I'll get some .030 on Wednesday and try it again, but, in the meantime, you guys can make me feel a LOT better by telling me what's up??

    Hank:
    I really think its just slipping on the wire, remember to run a larger size tip than the wire on Aluminum and push the puddle. On short circuit your used to you can start the arc with the wire right on the work piece, with Aluminum you have to get the wire feeding a bit and fall into a spray arc, this is basically just holding stand off a bit farther than normal with mig. I used up a bunch of tips the first few days{ I ran out 3 times in 3 days, buy atleast a couple packages}

    I have run multi-pass on 1/2" plate with great results, you will love it, I certain of it!

    Peace,

      Hank,

      The standoff bit got me also as I went through some tips before figuring it out. I havn't had the need to use a larger size tip though, I use .030/4043 wire with .030 tips and no problems yet (I did just get some .035 tips to try though). The biggest problem is that I have only one tank with argon and I keep using it up playing with the tig machine I am thinking about upsizing that tank the next fillup. I don't know if its just me but there is a slight delay between pulling the trigger and the start of wire feeding, I am hoping thats the way it works . Pjseaman is right, it is fun in big bunches

        Mine has that same delay, so I don't think any worries are in order. It welds well so keep on, right!

          Thanks guys. I feel better now! I'm thinkin' that the slight delay between pulling the trigger and the feed motor starting is a built-in hose purge so the shielding gas has a sec to get through that 20' hose? Anyway, mine waits too!. Thanks for the tip about standing off a bit. Probably saved me a few contact tips!

            You are right Hankj the delay is a purge.

            Sundown I just upgraded my tank up to a 320 ran out to fast.

                I'm guessing that a 320 should hold you, I think I am going to a 150. That is if I can carry one

                  George:
                  Tip the tank, cradle the neck in one hand, and push kick the bottom and steer it with the angle of the top cap. Roll, roll, roll your tank, gently round the shop, merrily merrily merrily, life is but a dream.

                  Ok I am not exactly right in the head:}
                  Peace,

                      Peace,
                      I called around today and actually the biggest problem is that they want $45 to upgrade from my argon 80 to a 150, a refill for the 80 is $44 and a refill for a 150 is $70, so I am thinking that the advantage is small anyway. I can get refills at another dealer for $27.50 (80) and $45.00 (150) but they only charge the tank to 1700 psi while the other guys give me a full charge of 2200 psi. The reality is that I have two C25 tanks and probably 95% or more of what I do is Mig anyway. Most likely I will just fill the 80 and deal with it after the Holidays next year.
                      Regards, George
