What to use for Tungsten grinding??

I have been looking on the net and the only one that is half way affordable is the sharpie. I cannot decide if I should buy that or just buy another bench grinder and dedicate it to tungsten grinding. If I did the bench grinder then I would have to make something to hold the tungsten to get perfect results. The other option is Lowe's has a sharpening wheel for $30 or so that I could get. Again I would have to make a jig for perfect results. Any ideas or suggestions? I just don't know if the sharpie is worth spending $250? Anyone use it? Is it better than bench grinding? What do you use and do you have any pics of your setups? I need to get something today or get it on order because my Dynasty 200dx will be here early next week! Also keep in mind this is for use in my home shop and not a full time tig operation.

I would just use the cheap bench grinder and grind the taper by eyeball.

What about the sharpening wheel? It is cheeper than the bench grinder. It is also smaller because it only has one wheel. Is a sharpening stone ok to use?

I am not familiar with the sharpening wheel. I would get a little bench grinder. You won't be putting much stress on it.

i vote for the sharpie just because it is set up to give you a pro. point and do it reepeatadly consistantly. consitancy is important. as i will be lerning TIG i want to stack the deck in my favor and not have a bad grind driving me crazy. if your grind is too rough you will get arc wander and i dont need to add problems when im lerning. at $250.00 that is cheap enough fo a hobbiest that wants consistancy. if i had to grind 5 times a day 300 days a year i would get a perana, but for a home shop i think the sharpie is the ticket.

Ask Andy has 1 and gave it good reviews, he uses it when on the road at shows.

they are reversable (can use bolth sides)
they are expected to get 180 + sharpinings per side

Doh! Don't show everyone that, thats the one I was already watching On another note I looked at the sharpening wheel at Lowees and it is real low RPM. Will the low RPM of a sharpening stone work on tungsten?

Hmmmmn....I think probably not. If you took a 4" grinder and slowed it down, it would not grind steel very fast.

the higher th revs the smoother the finsh, thje smoother the finish the better the arc start and control.

Well then that settles that. It is down to a bench grinder or a Sharpie. Would be nice to save the space though. Does anyone have any comments on using the sharpie? I know it is just a $40 dremel knockoff and a custom attachment. Is this worth $250. Does it have enough power? Has anyone just machined their own head for a dremel to do the same thing? I could make my own if I had one to look at

cordless drill

Have you ever tried chucking your tungsten up in your cordless drill?? works wonders on 3/32 and bigger tungsten, use on a bench grinder, belt sander, or hand grinder. By using the drill, you will get uniform points everytime. give it a try, you may have all you need already.

We always just used a belt sander at the shop. Always seemed to do the job for us.
