Tungsten Sharpening Dynasty 200DX

What is the cheepest method for me to do my tungsten grinding? I have a lathe and a mill, but can those be used to do this? I do have a bench grinder, but I uses both wheels on steel all the time and can't give up either side. I also have a Dremel tool. What about those $40 hand held ones I have seen. Any suggestions appreciated. I may consider purchasing one of those realy small cheepo harbor freight sharpeners or something. Let me know what you guys think.

I use an aluminum oxide wheel on a 25 dollar cheapo grinder

It is a nice hand held sharpener. The only problem I have seen with these and similar units is the wheel wears out rather quickly. The wheel usually costs as much as the sharpener.

Yes $250 is less mony than some other machines. Before purchasing do consider the initial $250 plus a new wheel in 3-6 months. Now you have invested nearly $500. For around $600 you can have the Piranha II from Diamond Ground Products . This unit's wheel is double sided and the machine is also adjustable to make the most of the entire wheel surface area. Yes a new wheel is around $300, but it lasts a long time on one side and has 2 sides. It is something to consider...

Does the curve of a grinding wheel affect anything? or do you grind them on the flat side of the wheel? I know you want the grain to be towards the tip and not circular around the tungsten. What exactly is your method on a grinding wheel? You might as well get used to my TIG welding newbie questions .

acording to what i read the wheel is reversable, dont know if the adjustable 1 alows you to move the grind point though.
after i get used to TIGing i would think the amout of grinding for a hobiest would be minamal (once i lern not to comtaminate with filler) it is at this point that unless i started a welding buisnes the smaller wheel would be suficant, if i started using it regularly then i could justify the price of the Piranha II.

maybe andy will jump in and tell us how often he has to replace his wheel, or about how many grinds to a side?

i was a bit suprized thet they were only $30.00 happily of corse. but i have no ideal how long they are expected to last i was hoping that andy would jump in and let us know.
i would love to get the perona2 but am realy stretching it just trying to get the dynasty 200 DX. if i was a buisness then it would shourly be a great ideal to get the per.2 but as this is realy just a hobbie and so far has only made me spend $$$ just getting the sharpie is going to be a real treat.
if i ever figure out how to make some $$$ with all this stuf then ill look into lots of things i would like to have as well as will no dought need.
as i'm only able to get up and about for a few houres a day and any real time spent in the shop usualy results in spending the next day stuck in bed it realy is hard to find a way to make cashflow. it took me almost 3 years working with a pain managment specialest just to be able to get what lil out and about time i have now.well enough wineing about my problems. back to how long the disk lasts . ill e-mail arc-zone and ask but it would be nice to here from andy.
ill post there reply when i get it.

sounds like it should fit the home shop prity good. im not real shoure but i would hope it would take me a wile to need 360 sharpinings if im fouling that much maybe i need to concider another hobbie LOL

What about using a sharpening wheel. Lowes has one for $29. I could make an adjustable jig to hold the tungsten at the proper angle. Would a sharpening wheel do the job on tungsten, or is it too rough or too fine? I am having a hard time parting with $250 for some reason. What about wet grinding the tungsten, is this a bad idea? I ordered 3/32" 1.5% lanthinated for my first tries at TIG welding.

As long as your grind is longitudinal you should have no problems. I used a $20 bench grinder for what seemed like forever before I went with the Piranha II sharpener.

What type material are these wheels? The aluminum oxide wheels on a bench grinder cut well. However, some materials may not work as tungsten alloys are tough to grind. A fine grit sharpening wheel turning 1500-2000 rpm's won't grind tungsten very well.
