Help with Tig

I just ordered a Dynasty 200DX and would like your opinion on the follwing kit

it is the same setup as the contractors kit - the foor controle and case.

if you are going to get that setup you should go ahead and get the contractors kit as it will get you the foot controle, and carry case for your dynasty.

I have tryed the foot control and did not like it.
When you try to weld out of postion it is akward.
And you need to keep moving the foot control every time you repostion.
I tryed the finger control and you can move as much as you want.

Backyard tigger,

I purchased the finger control kit with my dynasty and I am just learning to TIG and I can't stand the finger control, or maybe I can't be comfortable with it. Do you have any tips?? like how to position the switch or hold the torch, maybe I am doing something wrong. As right now I am seriously considering trading my finger control for a foot control. BTW I have the NorthSouth control, is the east west any better?

I have used the east west one and my thumb is in the right place.
east west means on the side.
If you need to leaen over your work or move around alot you do not have to repostion your foot control.

every one has there own preferance as to foot or finger. if finger works better for you great. they do make the contractors kit with the finger controle in it have you considerd that option?
i didnt see the finger controle kit on that site but have seen it. if you would like i can track 1 down for you.

i have never used eather type but can see your point about out of position being a problem with a foot controle, i'm shoure that is why they make the finger controle.

Both controls, foot and hand, have their place. I own and use both. My preference for the hand control is a N/S type. The ramp up is not as fast, but fine control is easy. The hand control takes considerable practice to learn. The foot control has a much easier learning curve.

i gotta agree with hawk on this one both controls have there place and if i ever get a shop and a butt load of $$$ i will have both

what is your welding applacation ?


i have only used the finger control once and that was enough for me ! i have done hundreds upon hundreds of weld hours out of postion with the foot pedal and it works fine for me

I bought my hand control in a goody bag sale out of a car trunk on the roadside so to speak. This guy had a bag and he said it had (2) 75' 14 pin extension cords for the 24VAC wire feeders and a TIG handcontroller. I looked inside and saw at least one cord and some Miller bags. He was in a hurry and I threw him $250 cash and took a chance. When I got back to the shop and opened up the bag and wow!

There were both extension cords and the hand controller plus a few other pin adapters. All were new in their Miller bags. All in all about $800 in list prices. I kept all the stuff and use most of it. I figure I have $25 in the hand controller.

That is why I have both controllers. Otherwise it would be foot pedal only. I use it 95% of the time. Most out of position stuff is not a problem except on the road.

My personal preference is the hand control over a foot control. I have used the miller East - West style attached to a Syncrowave 250 which was ok except for being unable to leave it set at a particular amperage because the switch was integrated with the roller.

My current setup is a north - south roller setup with a seperate switch which I find is excellent! The most difficult part was learning to hold the torch like a pencil using your index finger on the switch and your middle finger to adjust the amperage with the roller. My work is a spread of welding cracks underneath aluminium boats to welding up diesel tanks that are being put into survey. A foot control would not cut it with the out of position welding when doing the boats mainly because you are lying on your back! There are advantages and disadvantages to both foot and hand controls, you just have to work out which option gives you the least disadvantages and go with that.
