  • flange wizard tools "CHARIOT" cutting guide...

I bought one of these cutting guides, and after trying every adjustment I could imagine, I still wind up with the torch tip about 1/2" above the surface of the metal. I don't think it'll cut too good that high up, but I haven't tried it yet in case I want to return this thing. It's a well made, nice looking tool, but if I can't use it, I probably ought to get back my 50 bucks, huh?

Anyone have one, used one, or knows anyone else whao has? I could use some feedback!

Torch tip needs to be no more than 1/8 " above material per instructions.

That ain't it, James. Thanks anyway.

Iramberson, that's how I always cut - with the preheat flames in contact with the steel.

I must be missing something here. I can't imagine a tool this well built would be on the market if it won't work. There were no instructions included, and from the appearance, it SEEMS obvious how to use it, but I'm scratching my head here...

I am not sure if this will help.... Chariot Cutting Guide

Unfortunately, I have never played with one of these, even though I have sold many of them. Every time we supply a big mechanical contractor, at a Paper Mill or Power Plant, those guys always demand Flange Wizard tools, the quality is second to none. I have done a couple shows with the owner of the company, and I can tell you, the stuff works. But me, I am always the guy who co-ordinates the show. I line up the vendors, order the products, rent the tents, make sure we have food, take care of the advertising and so on. Sadly, that never leaves me with a lot of time to play with all the neat toys.

If you don't have any luck here, send an e-mail from their home page, I'm sure he will fix you up......Flange Wizard

                Scott,

Thanks a bunch. That's the animal. I see that you also agree that the tools are well made.

I'll do as you suggested, and e-mail the company. Now, I'm thinking that the tool may not be designed for ligh duty units like my J-series, but the CA1260 still uses the same size tips as the 100-series, so???

                We'll see...

(that's how I always cut - with the preheat flames in contact with the steel.) The preheats should be above the steel, it tends to melt the top of the kerf with them too close. About an eigth inch off or so and it keeps from damaging the tip also.

                    Cary,

As shaky as this old frame gets, I really don't know what happens when I start to move the torch along any given line. That's why I bought the goody - thought it would help. But, 1/2" is still too much gap, methinks. I do OK on thicker stuff where the travel speed is slower. I have my biggest problems trying to finesse the faster work in lighter guages.

For now, I'm gonna have another Red Tail Ale, from the Mendocino Brewing Company in Ukiah, CA! Got a vat of chile on the stove in preparation for tomorrows football extravaganza which requires supervison!!

                    You guys stay well.

                      Scott,

Got my answer from flange wizard. If I had messed around with it, I probably would have figured it out, but I was reluctant to screw around with the tool if I might need to return it.

Anyhow, it'll work just fine. I'll be able to get the preheats just where Cary Urka says he runs 'em - 1/8" off the stock.

I've got a chunk of 3/8 plate left about 8" wide x 2'. I'll make chunks out of it tomorrow, and report to the brethren!

                      Thanks again for the tip.

Glad you got it working Hank. I suspected that there was something wrong in the set-up. Happy Cutting!....

This thing is slick. I made the modifications suggested by the flange wizard folks, popped it on the torch, and fired it up. Sweet. Wish I had one of those **** digital cameras - the cuts are the cleanest I've ever made. I didn't have any 16ga. left, but if I can tune that in too, all the plasma cutter money can go in the MM 210 pot!!
