  • A 500lb. Lawn Ornament

    ( donning flameproof suit )

Yes, it's a Lincoln... my apologies, men, but this forum is the only one coming up in web searches that looks like it might have a remote chance of getting an answer, so I am placing it before you.

The stator is open and Lincoln's "certified repair center" tells me it's "obsolete, no parts available."

1993 Weldanpower 8000, Onan 16, 11 hours ( yes, that's how sparse the welding business is in my town ) on the meter.

The local motor rewinder tells me Lincoln "won't release the coil data, so there's nothing we can do." But...

They claim they might be able to copy the stator coil if I can remove it- but frankly after partially disassembling the unit, it looks like it was designed to be replaced with a new unit rather than repaired-- the stator leads are not terminated to a board, as they usually are, but go directly to the front panel where they are swaged into the controls. Aluminum wiring, too- the cheapskates!

It seems to me the following options are open-

    1- make it a lawn ornament ( a $2623, quarter-ton lawn ornament- grrr! )

2- look for another unit with a bad engine and swap parts ( question- where? And how much should I expect to pay? )

3- salvage the engine and build an 8 to 10KW lighting plant for standby AC power at home--

    Any ideas?

( And yes- I wrote Lincoln Electric about it- over a month ago. Their silence is deafening. But the local dealer would love to sell me a new 10000-- "special sale!" )

    No firesuit needed here.

    We are a loving bunch

I would ask Lincoln for a list of their service stations and start emailing them or calling them to see if they have any of those in stock inventory or if they have any used units you can salvage from. That unit is not an unusual one and there is bound to be parts floating around. Just have to find the right "junk" dealer.

    Good luck

    Andy

Where are you located?? I know of some places around TX. that would ship. I'll see if I can dig up the info on this one in Dallas. They have a ton of machines for parts. I had an old company machine that did a similar thing. It was a Weldanpower AC/DC. I took it in for some routine maint. and they told me it had a few hours left on it before the stator blew apart. It came unbolted somehow. They didn't even think it was possible, but it did happen, somehow.

Well, I'm in Brunswick, Georgia- midway between Jax and Savannah... kind of in the middle of nowhere.

Frankly, even that far away might be worth paying the shipping, as opposed to trying to find something within driving distances here, so I would welcome any information you might have.

Ok here goes. I couldn't find the part place, but the one I found has parts and whole machines. They trade out machines, too. You know, running for not running. That sort of thing. Anyway, here it is : Applied Equipment 214-630-6121 ask for Jim or Larry. B&R Welder used to have a repair facility in Va. They may be able to put you onto something on the East Coast maybe. Hope this gets you started.

              Backhoe,
I could give you a phone # of a guy that fixes all kinds of generators. He is 84 years old and has a warehouse full of stuff. I bought this unit instead of a Older Lincoln drive he had forsale. It's not quite my ranger 305 G, but it is kind of cool for making power, in a place where you can't make too much noise. The last picture is my answer to a quiet new one. I love this old unit.I just slip the muffler on when I want it to whisper.

This guy lives in Oregon but is worth talking to anyway. I can get the # from the welding shop. He has fixed engine drives for over forty years and has seen it all.

                Backhoe,

Strange but not impossible that a unit with 11 hours would develop an open in the stator. I'm not trying to second guess but I would really check and recheck that stator. You might be surprised to find it is not the stator. I say this because I have come close to trashing good field coils and armatures. One time I had an intermitent lead. It would check good when I crossed the leads but when I went to check the coil it would show an open. Just a thought. I just hope you get lucky...

I can't tell from your post who checked the stator. If the rewinder checked it disregard rechecking. They should know how.

moe, thanks- it was the Lincoln "certified" repair center in Jax, for whatever that is worth, who claimed an open stator. I'm still in the middle of identifying the leads, and intend to check them with a meter, to be certain. Yes, 11 hours is not much service for failure.

I'd appreciate contact information for the old fellow- can't hurt to talk to him. My Dad was a licensed Master Wireman and could do that stuff in his sleep, but he's long gone. 1890-1985.

moe1942, your intuition was correct-- I just finished checking the rotor, and all the stator windings- none are open. I noticed that a taped splice in the 1, 2, and C2 winding had not been untaped- so how could Lincoln have checked it?

I disconnected all the windings so other circuitry would not interfere with the readings, and-- no open coils.

So much for Loncoln's $30 "diagnostic."

well i think you have found out where NOT to take it for repairs.
did your serches find you someplace else to go. even if you find the real problem i dont think i would take it back there for the repair.

good luck hope you get it up and runnig.
                          thanks for the help
