  • powder that auto sharpins tungsten any good?

my local dealer showed me a botle of powder that is suposed to chemicly sharpin your tungsten (he worned not to leave in too long or it would eat it up)

any one ever try this stuff??

its only $8.00 a bottle buti think it would use up your tung. faster than grinding it but what kind of finish would you get?
    thanks for the help

    fun4now,
I have used it before, it makes a very sharp, high angle point, it is probably best to use on thin electrodes, 1/16 and less to reduce breakage of electrode while grinding. I prefer to grind bigger electrodes, as I mentioned before, I use a belt sander with 80 grit, it is easier to keep the electrode from jumping around than a wheel, then I will polish with a Scotchbrite wheel. The powder is kinda cool to watch doing it's thing, you get electrode hot, then dip in and keep pulling in and out to keep reaction going, it is a Sodium compound of some sort, for the price, go for it just to see what happens, hope this helps, Paul

      Fun:
I had heard of it and it was great after the first use, I realized that time is money and not stopping to regrind was a great aid for me as a beginner in tig. More time on arc is more time to the education less to waiting at the grinders. I do realize the cost and possible misuse of this product by oversharpening but for me it makes sense and it has allows more welds per evening at school. Bottom line buy it, use it, like it, I am certain you will!

      Peace,

Hi, I found that the quality of the point that chem-sharp gave was better than I could grind for very low amp use. It seemed to get rid of arc wonder that I was having trouble with when using a transformer based (lincoln 175) machine. Good luck, JEFF

A chemical sharpener is good stuff. It will sharpen any size electrode and works great on the .010" and .020" where grinding is near impossible. You can get about 300 sharpenings to a jar. It usually says 500, but chemicals get hard and crusty after a while. It is a worthwhile investment. With the Dynasty strike an arc to get the tungsten hot. It won't short out on DCRP as some other non inverter machines will to heat the tungsten.

            Thanks All

ill pick some up when i get my TIG sounds like a great ideal even if i only use it during the lerning curve (when contaminating happens the most )

            thanks
