Thanks klsm54 for the info. I agree, bigger companies in all categories of business today are swallowing up smaller businesses to eliminate there competition, It's going to make it very hard on us little guys in the future.

Sadly tackit, it IS the corporate executive types that discuss what the little guy pays. The same ones who don't care if they gouge you and you quit. If they can raise prices 15% on all the walk in trade, so what if a few get mad and quit, they will more than make it up on the ones who stay. As long as they keep up the margins on the little guy, in their minds, they can justify going after more, low margin, big dollar business. It is not the little guy, the poor guy at the counter just does what he is ordered to do.

As more small businesses get swallowed up by larger and larger acquisition companies, the trend will continue. The small independant distributor , at least the successful one, knows better. He would much rather have 100, $1000.00 ayear accounts, than 2, $50,000.00 a year accounts. The big corporations have lost sight of where their bread is buttered.

Sad? Most certainly! True? You better believe it!....

If big users and gas companies get all happy and sweaty by making me pay more for gas then the welding industry in this country is in the hands of some truly sorry individuals.

There are to many good reasons and excuses in this country to crap on the little guy. If I was to go to college today I would major in "excuse making and camouflaging the truth, it probably be one of the most sought after and highest paying jobs in corporate America.

cope is absolutely right. Gas pricing is driven by competition, and market conditions, in a given area. Some prices ARE still gouging, but there can be a wide variance and still be FAIRLY priced for a specific market. Also, don't always judge what you pay compared to what a bigger user pays. We in the gas industry have graduated pricing and normally give larger customers considerably better pricing than the smaller customer. That also varies from area to area. What might be a large customer in a small market area, in small town America, could be small potatoes in a larger industrial based area.

Worse yet, I think I've been overcharged for the gas, to save some money I upgraded a Q bottle I had to a S bottle. I paid $30 for the bottle upgrade and $38 for the 98/2 gas. I read another members thread (not connected to this one) and he said he paid less than that to fill a T bottle.

The lets get into tackit's nickers saga continues to this day, but who said life is fair right!

tackit, gas and cylinder prices vary so widely that it's not fair to compare acroos the country. Local pricing is what you need to compare (where there is any competition).

Don't you just hate distributors who can't label their gases in plain English? Like they have some secret formula or something....

    Thanks again Alex.

It's just that I've recently had to deal with some really unbelievably stupid mistakes on the part UPS and a few other vendors, I guess it's all made me a little gun shy.

    Tackit,
Is that what you paid for? If so, just peel the sticker off and go weld with it. Your welds should tell you if that's what it is.

    Y'all be cool,
    Alex

What does a 0-2 sticker mean on a bottle of gas

I just got a bottle of gas that has a sticker on it that says sheilding gas O-2 on it, does that mean it's 98/2. I asked my dealer and he said it did, but because i've never bought 98/2 before I'm not sure. Do any of you know if my dealer is right? thanks.
