  • Miller Motorsports...Really?

I have been wanting to ask this question for a while but I'm not sure this is the right place to ask. I am around enough motorsports venues to see Lincoln's obvious involvement in advertising and participation in stock car racing and drag racing to wonder why Miller doesn't have a more pronounced presence in the public eye. I know Miller has a part of the the industry as buisiness is concerned but I happened to see a Miller tent in the background of an OCC show (OK, I watch it!) in Daytona and it made me wonder about the distribution of wealth at the corporate level. On a more important corporate power trip I did wear my Miller shirt in the winners circle last night as my son won the UBDRA Jr drag class last night for a grand. Racing is great....sometimes. I know this might not be a question for Andy but it is something that stands out through its absence. ....PRI Show isn't far off. Thanks, JEFF

    jeff,

I don't get out to many of the smaller races, but the NASCAR races I do make are predominately Miller. The Miller Motorsports program is relatively new and has grown faster than anybody really anticipated. It is a full time job for Andy to handle the NASCAR teams that Miller sponsors. Even with some extra help he stays snowed under. Perhaps down the road.

I really didn't mean for the subject header to sound as sarcastic as it did. I'm sure you know where my heart is as far as blue blood runs but the blue is not as visible in the public eye as general public ads go. I know Miller has a great corporate involvement(nascar) as racing goes but I don't think the racing public sees it. That was really all I was getting at. Maybe a guided tour on a future issue of Power-Click through some of the NHRA or NASCAR shops could be a starting piont for some behind-the-scenes information that few have seen. I know first hand that Miller has a lot of talent available to their customers and that it is a great resource to have at hand. On the smaller side we where racing at Gateway International near St. Louis MO at the United Black Drag Racers Association annual race. This is a group of people who put on this race (ubdra.org) that make a lot of money and donate it all back into the local area. There should be pictures on their site or on Brett Keppner's site. Thanks, JEFF

            have to look for it

it is true that if you want miller you have to look for it. unlike red that is in every store you walk into.
maybee miller markets more to the pros that dont shop for welding suply's at home depot. they have hobart for them.
took me a wile to find my miller when i started welding. actualy got it off the net and didnt find a place to buy 1 in my area till i went out looking for gass, if my TCS had gotten in there gas setup a little sooner i wouldnt have ever found the welding shop that carries miller .

i guess if you are good enough people will look for you "if you build it they will come" as it were LOL.
            thanks for the help
            ......or..........

              keep looking

I'm involved with tons of advertizing. Just did photo shoots with Matt Kenseth, I do about 4 articles each year for different racing publications, the latest being for Circle Track magazine's last month issue on Tig welding. I do articles for Stock Car Racing magazine and 4 wheel and off road. I just completed 2 articles for the Applied Welding publication on Roush Racing and Richard Childress Racing. Also just completed today the final artwork for the annual MILLER Motorsports Calendar that gets 100,000 printed for distribution give-a-ways. The SEMA show and PRI and countless other car shows will see Motorsports banners and the Reality of Speed TV show, www.realityofspeed.com that highlighted work in the racing industry was also a project of mine. I sponsor a bunch of regional and local race series and racers. I even do a couple of monster trucks and Scott Taylor's CORR off road race truck, www.nitemare4x4.com and www.blackstallion4x4.com www.taylorsoffroadracing.com The avenues of delivery to the public are huge and I'm but only one person that has to make correct choices to hit the largest audience that I can. Most bang for the buck. The red guys have more people to do this activity but I believe I get better results from a more focused pinpoint approach. It's easy to flood the market with pictures, promo material or even try to be a contigency sponsor but there is no way the return on investment will offset that expenditure. I can show where I'm making it pay off.

              Hope this helps.

              Andy

                The best advertising Miller has

is the number of blue boxes in the back of trucks and trailers, visible when driving down the road. A second is the amount of blue machines visible in mechanics shops, welding shops, and machine shops around the country. Another is the view of blue in shows like American Chopper, Hot Rod, Monster Garage, Monster House.

Home Depot and other big box stores are good places to sell small machines. If a business wants to be more serious about selling the bigger or more powerful items, they should focus their efforts elsewhere.

It would be interesting to see the proportion of small, medium, and large weldors of each type for Lincoln and Miller, but I am sure that information is proprietary.
At a certain point in every project, it comes time to shoot the engineers and build the d*** thing.
