  • Adding a suitcase mig to a 400D or Big Blue

We have a LN-25 suitcase mig that we have been using on one of our Bobcat 225's. The welder cannot keep up and we want to get a controler for one of our larger welders to allow the mig welding. Most likeley, we will be using a liquid cooled Big Blue.

What is the best valued unit for this application. New products or older models are both considered valid options.

I will be contacting my gas supplier about this, but wanted to educate myself a little first.

I have been looking around on the Miller website, but have not found what I think I am looking for yet.

Anybody at least know the correct name?

Is it just referred to as a remote control? I would not think so, but I am asking because I do not know for sure.

The suitcase 12 VS will fit the bigger engine drives well.

I have been told that the wire feed does not work well at all when connected directly to the welder I want to use. There is some sort of "box" that goes between the welder and ln-25 wire feed. This is what I am asking about. I think they are around $600.

We are not looking for a new wire feed unit. We already have one.

Do you know what it is I am looking for?

The LN-25 is a "Voltage Sensing" wire feeder, as is the 12 VS. The nature of the beast is that you should not need any "Box" to run these feeders. The do run better on a machine with a CV setting, especially with gas shielded wires. If you are happy with how the feeder works on your Bobcat, it should work just as well on a Big Blue, if it has CV.

I made a mistake. The welder is not a Big Blue, it is a Big 50.

It must be cc, not cv. That is why we need this additional hardware.

At one time Miller offered a field installation kit for adding CV to Big 40 and Big 50 Models. I am not sure if that kit is still available or not. It would probably take a phone call to Miller since this machine is no longer available.

What type of wire are you running? If you can use a self shielding, flux cored, wire, you may find that it runs acceptably on the CC machine. If you are using a gas shielded wire, the CV option will be a BIG improvement.

Thanks for the good info guys.

I will ask about the CV kit. Maybe that is what I am being quoted. I am just asked him to send me some info and a quote 1st. Sounded like he was going to have do a little bit of searching also.

Most of the time we are using gas shielded wire with it.

Well, I talked to the welder actually using the LN-25 and I found out some more info.

The LN-25 has a switch for cc or cv. When he was using it with a bobcat 225 in the cv mode, everything was great. Now with the Big 50, which I think is just cc, it does not weld as well as with the Bobcat regardless of the position of the cc/cv switch.

Would the addition of a cv kit to the Big 50 be possible and or benificial?
