  • While Welding, My Bacon Sound Gets Lost ?

I was welding last night and trying some different settings. All my welds produce a "bacon-sizzle" sound. Then I swtched some settings around (forgot to write them down as I changed them) and all of a sudden, my bacon sizzle was gone

The sound was simply that of the shielding-gas flowing and every so often, a faint crack or pop. It almost sounded "torch-like" - if you know what I mean.

The bead that it made was really nice though.

Anybody else every have this happen to them? And if so, what actually "did" happen?

sounds like you made a higher voltage adjustment and you are near a spray.

      Hey Andy,

Well, I'm almost positive that I had it on tap-7 (MM210) and I slowed the wire feed FROM 80 TO 45-50. Then the sizzle sound dissappeared and I got the sound I described. I'm using C75% - could I have begun to spray? I thought you couldn't with C75% ???

        Most definitely!

Tap 7 is the highest voltage setting and by slowing your wire down, you are burning the wire off too quick. The wire never gets a chance to hit the work piece. The wire hitting the work piece many times a second gives you the bacon fry sound. You are very close to a spray most likely a glob transfer.

Why are you on tap 7? Are you welding 3/8"?

Glob Transfer: I think that may have been the case - the bead was THICK - a lot of filler metal. Nice looking though!

Why on Tap 7? - Dan made me do it! No, he suggested those settings to me for 1/4. I believe he used these settings to get that awesome looking weld with his 251. I was just trying different things.

What is a better method, glob, short or spray for 1/4 angle iron - that needs to be strong? (trailer construction - see my new post)

Thanks Andy. You, Dan and Hawk have taught me SO much with questions I asked and by me just reading your posts.

Well, if it's in position, Spray is great. Building a trailer is not going to be in position all the time. Also you are correct in having to put a different gas on. Anything 90% argon up to 98/2 will do. I would stay with short circuit. We are doing a trailer project to be documented for the site early next year. Should be fun as I'm going to use a few different types of welders to give everyone a taste of each ones capabilities.

            Good luck

Dang you guys are good, you can tell welding processes by the sound!!! haha.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this article on building a trailer.
I'm interested in one day becoming a good enough welder to do this project.
Although I will probably wait until I have a couple years of solid welding experience, and a few welding courses under my belt, (as well as taking samples to the experts before completing it.

Thanks much, and keep us posted!!!!
