Stick welding - push or pull?

I guess that I am totally doing this all backwards, learning TIG and then improving my stick welding.

What is the proper technique for stick welding? Is the rod pushed in the direction of travel or pulled in the direction of travel?

Steved, it is normally pulled to keep slag entrapment from occuring, when going vertical uphill, you will be pushing. hope this helps, Paul
