Welder newbie

Just got a stick welder from a relative and want to teach me and my son to weld.

Have used MIGs before

Whats the best rods to start with, size, type etc just to get use to technique
Also whats the proper amp range per size , etc

Any other tips appreciated

I'd say 3/32 6013 rods are the best for learning on. For basic starting amperage, go with the decimal equivalent of the rod. 3/32 = .09 or around 90 amps, 1/8 = .125 or around 125 amps and so on. Start with learning how to strike an arc first, after that, its all practice practice practice.

As Tanner said, the 6013 is a good rod to start with and to stay with. I learned on 7014, but back in 1974 they were scarce as hen's teeth so I went to the 6013. I have used 1/8" for years because that's what I learned on, but I like the 3/32 for most work. Miller makes a neat stick slide rule calculator that should be available at your dealer.

As Tanner and Cope suggested the 6013 in a 3/32" diameter rod is a great choice for beginners. The 7014 would be a good second choice. These rods burn best DCSP or electrode holder on the ground side with your ground clamp on the + terminal. They will also burn great on AC. The 7014 on AC is a smooth burning rod that is easy to restrike and the slag almost peels off by itself! If you are having problems with these rods on DC check your lead hook up.

Steer clear of thr 7018 and 6010 rods. They are good rods, but not for first learning to stick weld.
