  • Two Questions??

I have a Delta Band Saw withh a broken table support which I believe is cast.

Should I braze this or can I stick it?

Also which is the best stick rod for galvinized pipe?
    I know about the fumes.

    Thanks

    table

if it is cast i would stick it.cast rod is expensive but you can use 7018 just do small runs at a time 1" or less.

as for the pipe i have used my mig on some with good results
    good luck
    thanks for the help
    ......or..........
    hope i helped

      JOHN1,

The 7014 rod is a good all round rod for galvanized material. It burns hot, it is easy to restrike, and works well on AC and DCSP. If you want less penetration, you can burn the 7014 on DCRP. You will get a slighlty humpy and rough bead on DCRP. As you mentioned you know about the fumes. Be careful. Many fence contractors in my area use the 7014 on chain link gates.

        John1,

Stick weld with 55% or 99% nickel rod depending on the alloy. I'd try 55% nickel first. It is about $35/pound. If it is a large heavy area, brazing is more practical for longevity.

I vote for brazing too. I have made a lot of repairs on cast like this. If possible cut a piece of steel to lay across the brake and braze it on to the bracket for added strength.
With brazing you get a better bond and can control the amount of metal you are adding plus you are heating more uniformly. And always with cast let it cool slowly, never quench it.
Also for those who aren't familar with brazing you need flux coated rod or a can of dip type flux. I use the dip type, it's powder like, you heat the rod and dip it in the flux to get it to stick to the rod. They both work just as good though.

I prefer 6010 or 6011 for galv. To fight the penetration issues, I either increase travel speed or decrease amperage within reason or both.

I'm thinking the table support being cast may also not be that thick so I would lean towards brazing. Brazing will heat the area slower than stick welding giving it a better chance of not cracking again. Don't be afraid to go the 99% right away if you are unsure of the cast quality.
