  • Options for a Dynasty 200DX.....

If all goes well, I plan on purchasing one around September. What would you guys recommend....Should I opt for the "contractors kit" with foot control?? or purchase the bare bones unit....with accessories (torch, foot control etc) recommended here??? Have to draw the line at $2700.00...You've got $2700.00 of my money...Now spend it wisely!!! I've got a 210, so have two of the three bases covered....All replies appreciated....Don..

    Uses for Dynasty 200DX......

    - Hobbiest...
    - Teach myself a new skill...
    - Light fab work...
    - Service and Repair....
    - Some automotive sheetmetal repair...
    - Light aluminum fab...

    Wheat:
Here is a link for your machine with foot control, they also offer a hand controlled model for a savings of about$40. The model is exactly the $2700 you mentioned. http://www.brwelder.com/indextemplat...&SubCategory=3
This may be the source you have but Its the model I am hoping to buy next year, although I wouldn't mind having the tigrunner package with water cooler and torch!

This is HAWKs favorite macine and he may have a different approach that may work better for your purposes.

    Weld well,

      Wheat,

I vote for the D200DX and put together the parts you want rather than purchasing the contractor's kit. Why?

      1. The machine comes with the dinse connector torch adapter as does the kit. There is no need for 2. Quick disconnects will work better if you have a need to swap torches.

      2. The #17 Diamond Back torch supplied in the kit is a nice torch, but I prefer a more flexible power cable. You can call Miller (1-800-4AMILLER) and ask for Dave in TIG applications. He can tell you if Miller has any other cable options. If Miller has no other offerings, then check out CK's website and look at a #9 (125 amp air cooled torch) or a #17 (150 amp air cooled torch). Look at the SUPERFLEX cable models. http://ckworldwide.com/ View the gas cooled torch section under standard torches. CK or the torch mfg of your choice can supply collets, collet bodies, cups, etc for the tungsten sizes you want. .040". 1/16", and 3/32" are the commom sizes to start. I use .020" for some specialty applications and it costs very little to get it included in your initial purchase.

      3. For about the same money you can get a good quality regulator/flow meter rather than the standard regulator supplied in the kit. A flow meter is easier to adjust and re-adjust with repeatable results.

      4. The Miller heavy duty foot pedal is my preference. Model RFCS-14 HD : Part Number 194 744. It is definitely easier to learn than a hand control. You might save some money with the standard foot control 043 554, but the heavy duty is more durable and has a heavier cord that can be routed to exit the control from any side for operator comfort.

There are exceptions with the Dynasty as it has programmable sequencing that can be used in conjunction with a simple on/off hand remote. None the less the foot conrol is a valuable accessory. It can also be used with the sequencing options.

      5. A small amount of #4 cable with a ground clamp and a dinse connector will make your work lead (ground cable).

If you do not want to go through all the leg work, the contractor's kit is a good value and will do all you need.

        PJ,

Looks like we posted at the same time. You are right. This is my favorite TIG machine for value, portability, and quality welds. I do have some other preferences for a TIG machine, but you cannot beat the Dynsaty 200DX for these reasons.

          Wheat,,

Heads up: The D200DX performs best on DC and AC with 1.5% lanthanated tungsten. It is not radioactive when grinding dust is released into the air, it is capable of handling higher heat capacities per size than pure, thoriated, and ceriated alloys. I always grind my taper and put a small flat on the tungsten for AC and DC use. Some people ( A-) do not flat the end for DC, but I find it helps create a steadier arc. You will find this is habit and personal preference.

Dynasty 200DX in September: What a great early Christmas gift!!!

            Hawk:
I knew you would come through, BTW last week I got some one on one with the instructor and the Dynasty300dx Tigrunner, on CrMo .063 tubing. Oh man I think I might have to jump from my mig band wagon. I think I will like spending some time with this machine. Also our school is now an AWS testing site, how cool is that.

            As always weld well,

              pj,

I love the 300DX and the Aerowave. Unless you have access like you mentioned such machines are not affordable. If you have the same opportunity on the Aerowave, then take it. This beast is about to be a blast from the past as rising production costs and decreasing demand are taking a toll on this aircraft industry mainstay.

Appreciate the response!!!! I already went out and bought the tungsten (lanth) 3/32, under recommendations from previous posts. THANKS! Got a flowmeter too!!! No tig yet, go figure?? Old rookie question?? If I buy a CK torch, will it "plug in" without any modifications to the machine?? Always like to research first...Once you fork over the money, you lose the power...Thanks again...Don

                  Wheat,

The CK torch will have the universal gas connector as do most all air cooled torches. Yes! That is where the dinse adapter that comes with the machine goes to work.

I'm also about to buy a dynasty200dx, but was thinking of getting weldcraft torches for it: 9 and 20. What sort of adapters will I need to do this, particularly for the water cooled torch?

Anyone care to offer comparisons between weldcraft and ck torches?

Also, as it will be my only welder, I intend to use it on rare occaisons on up to 1/4" steel and Al, but mainly 3/16" or less. Will I be left unsatisfied with the 200dx?

                      Tig torch

I've use Weldcraft air and water cooled torches, the 17, 20, 18. I now have a CK 200 and 230 for my Dynasty 300DX. The Superflex cables are hard to beat. Plus the size of the 230 is way more manuverable than the Weldcraft 18 torch I had on it. In my opinion CK is the way to go. One cool thing that Weldcraft offers is a torch that you can put different heads on. Hopfully CK will design something like this also.

The machine was designed primarily for 3/16" and down. It is more than a perfect choice for you application. Good luck and enjoy.

The #20 water cooled torch adapter is a Miller part number 190 219. The number 9 or 17 torch adapter is Miller part number 194 720.
The Weldcraft torches are nice and the SR225 series have the interchangeable heads as joebass mentioned. In the Weldcraft water cooled torches get the superflexible braided cables rather than the heavy duty plastic. I have one HD plastic and several flex braided lines. There is no comparison for comfort and all day use.

CK is a specialty torch manufacturer and will have items no on else makes. For everday day use the CK #9 with Superfex powercable is a nice rig. For occasionally use I still prefer the more flexible cables.

As for the #20 water cooled torch I use the Miller Diamond Back torch. Weldcraft and WNI both make torches for Miller. There is some debate, but I believe Weldcraft makes the #20 for Miller. It is a really nice torch. I use 3 of them and one is on a Coolmate 4 with the Dynasty 200DX.

                            Thanks for the info, guys.

I'm still trying to figure out the torch. Are the connections on the weldcraft and diamondback water cooled torches the same? Somewhere I got the impression that they used different connectors (and therefore different adapters for the 200dx).

Concerning the superflexible braided cables for the weldcraft torch, do you know if that is what you get with their "R" torch packages? (e.g. WP20-25R)

As for the CK torches, they seem to get good reviews, but I've had zero luck finding one. Only one local distributor, and they don't stock CK. Said they would have to check with CK and call me back, which they never did. Makes me worry what I'd ever do if I ever got one and needed parts/service. Where did you get yours?

                              Hobbyist,

The R suffix is the super flex cables on the Weldcraft SR225 series. The water cooled and air cooled do use different adapters. However, the #20 torch in any brand should use the same adapter. The #9 and #17 air cooled units will also use the same adapter regardless of brand. Order the CK off the net. That is your best bet. I have bought some of their stuff through a dealer on an order as needed basis with a bit better pricing. If you are going for the #20, then get the Miller Diamond Back. It is a great unit. As I mention I have 3.
