Chromium is poison in gasseous form and is easilly absorbed into the bloodstream so poisoning is real fast. Killing brain cells scares me, I've only got a few left. If you do, precaution on the side of all else, open air, draw air away from yourself not blowing on you. Respirator would be a great idea.

    Weld well, weld safe,

    tigman_1,

All my experience with chrome plated tube and rod has been second hand. I do know that the custom Harley shop here grinds to the white, tigs all joints, and chromes the entire piece. The hydraulic cylinder shop I use also grinds to the white, tigs, and rechromes the entire cylinder rod.

thehat is right..... gotta grind away the plating where you are going to weld... right down to the base steel.... otherwise you will end up with some mongrel alloy....
    hope this helps

Can,t say I ever tried, was always told you have to grind down to base metal and then weld.Be real careful with the dust and fumes, they are real nasty. HTH
