  • Remagnetizing generator

I've got a 5000 watt portable generator that doesn't produce electricity. Since all of the electrical connections are good, I think it is the residual magnetism. I have heard that applying 12c DC will remagnetize it, but where to apply the voltage?

There are two wires to the rotor, and three to the stator, with the third wire a center tap for the 120vac. Does anyone know which to charge up, and whether the generator should be turning at the time?

    Thanks
    Karl

Check the schematic if you have one to find the proper polarity of the brushes and apply the 12 volts DC to the brush connection while running. This should help unless the rotor is burnt open. A check at the slip rings with the brush wires disconnected will tell you.

    Good luck

      Thank you

      Worked like a charm.

Strangely, I didn't see this information anywhere else while googling the question.

      Thank you for the forum
