tig on stainless

Greetings, I teach a advanced high school power mechanics class. We will be building two new barbeque grills from stainless steel(big ones on a trailer). I have a tig welder set up with argon. My students have had great sucess on aluminum, and fair sucess on stainless, we will be using a pointed electrode with electrode negitive, gas flow ~ 17 cfm,, any other hints would be appriciated.. (or we could use our mig welder)

I feel mig is easier and for large projects the weld consistancy will vary less with mig. Using SS wire and Tri-mix gas will do great, match the wire to the grade of stainless that your welding and it should be great.

If it were me, I'd do partly what PJS said and go MIG but I would do TIG for anything external that would be in plain view. I would MIG all the internals and do all TIG on outside corners and such.

I agree with Andy, MIG on the internals and TIG on external welds. It will be a great experience for the students! Good luck!
