    Missing out

    I hear ya Hawk. When you live in a swamp and are limited to outdoor welding things don't happen quickly. Rained yesterday and will again today. Good thing I don't weld for a living. Wish I had JWELDS 800 sq ft shop!!!

    What I am anxious to find out is if I will be able to see the weld puddle with my tri-focals. That was one of the main reasons for buying the elite. I have it adjusted so I can see through the window with the bottom portion of my glasses.

    Also, my first project will be to put a Cub hood back together. Bubba hacked it up with a chain saw and a few gaps are almost a 1/4 inch wide. I'll be using a Mig welder. Can I use a piece of brass plate as a backing and fill them in or should I use a metal strip ? The majority of the two pieces are close fit so the few in question will be cosmetic welds.

    I have used brass, copper, and aluminum for backing strips when welding mild steel. However, my favorite material is a carbon block. I have use electric motor brushes for small fill ins and have 12" square x 1/2" thck carbon block for TIG fixtures, etc. If it is cosmetic and you have brass, then use it. It will work fine. My shop is much smaller than JWELDS, but I get it done. I wish I had that much space of even more and 40' ceilings to boot!

      Where do you get carbon with those dimensions??

        I had my dealer, Holston Gases, order it from Arc-Air ( Carbon Arc Gouge Torch Manufacturer). It is also available in 12" square x 1/4" thick. If you cannot locate one, email me and I'll get the info you need to order it. It was around $50 and the 1/4" thick plate is about $38.

          I have backed up gaps and small holes with a copper bar. I have lots of it 1/4" thick. I often bend it to fit the curves. It will leave a good 100% weld when done just polish off and the piece will be like new...Bob

            Missing out

            Y'all got me straight on gap filling. I have a piece of brass, 1/4x6x8 in. That should do nicely.
