The Econotig is a nice beginners machine. Its duty cycle rating is very low and I would not recommend this as a machine that will be used regulary in a session. It is only rated at 150 amps on a 20% duty cycle. Yes it will do aluminum. The Syncro 180 would be a better choice if you plan do do much welding. If you are interested, orgalmeister on this forum had an Econotig for sale a while back. Do a search for his name and /or Econotig and email him through the forum. I do not recall a post where he had sold it. -
Hawk, I second the vote for the 180. Smart shopping can reduce the price difference to a few hundred dollars and you have an industrial machine instead of a hobbyist model. I have not heard any complaints about the Econotig other than its obvious powr limitation.Originally posted by HAWK

I'm in the same boat-no bad comments here. The Econotig is not an industrial machine and will not stand up to the rigors of long session workouts or everyday use. Also aluminum welding is hard on a machine. Anodized is really hard one one. The Syncrowaves are industrial machines and can be found hard at work everyday in shops acoss this country.
You are right on a major purchase like the Syncro-180: smart shopping can narrow the price margin and save you the grief of trying to sell a lesser hobbyist type machine down the road. I have bought less machine than I really needed more than once and it't tough to sell out and rebuy. Most dealers won't take trade ins like they used to do! That's not really a bad thing. We as the small customer have to be better informed about the product and do our best to make a wise decision the first time.
Something else along this line: When I sold my mobile business I had to buy some additional TIG equipment for my shop. I was very fortunate because one man took purchased all of my equipment! I am very fortunate to have come out okay on the deal.Comment
