  • Gas Mix

I must be the newest Newby. Been stick, gas, & MIG welding for years but fairly new to TIG(1 yr). All with Miller of course. Live only about hour drive from the Miller factory. Just bought a new 180 SD, (can't afford the 200 Dynasty yet). Was wondering what the percentage of He to Ar Hawk is using to increase the heat when welding aluminum. Most of my work is welding various aluminum thicknesses for our own and several other race teams. Nice part of being retired is I can fabricate for racers full time.

About 1/2 way between Beaver Dam and Horicon. 30 miles South of Fond du Lac.

I think all the welders in wisconsin need to meet at a place and have a good time together welding stuff...and sorry for hijacking the thread!

Sounds like a good idea. Just finished welding a new alternator support. Been practicing on the track all afternoon with our 2nd race of the season tomorrow. We run a Super Late Model in the WCS (Wisconsin Challenge Series) that travels all over the state and a Limited Late Model that we run at Columbus and the Dells. Better get to bed and be bright for tomorrow.

            Moki,

I am currently running a 75% helium and 25% argon mix. It does well on the Dynasty. GTA/SPEC said he had good luck with the same mix on his Syncro 180 a few years ago. The Syncro 180 has a really good high frequency generator, the same as its bigger brothers, and should start up fine on this mix. You should be able to get .250" and maybe even .313" aluminum. One thing I like is the extra heat has a tendency to burn out any oxide inclusions that may otherwise be left in the weld.
