Is this thing suppose to sound like a mosquito

I received my dynasty 200DX today! Hook it up and tried some welding on the bench. Box sounds kind of like a mosquito once it's turned on. Is this normal. This is the first inverter I've ever heard or used. Also when using HF start, in dc mode, when I pressed the pedal to begin welding it makes a disctint pop when it starts the arc. Going back out there and try to clean my tungsten or a new piece. Thanks group.

Yes! That is the way the machine sounds. You are hearing the audible range output of the "Auto-Line" circuitry. This is normal. Forget it. You will get used to it and never notice it after a few uses.

It will also have a shrill sound when welding on AC. Most TIG machines are noisy on AC. I just throw in some paper ear plugs and crank it up! You will love the machine! You should not have the pop on the DC arc stop. Re-prep your tungsten and go again.

By the way this machine loves lanthanated tungsten on AC or DC. The prep is the same: longitudinal grind to a point and then give the point a small flat and you are ready to rock! It also loves 5356 filler. I use it when I can.

Thanks for the reply. What about the popping? Is it normal for this machine to makes a small pop when starting the arc in DC HF start Tig mode?

I will grab some CM tube and put it on DC and see what happens. I guess you are using CM tube?

I'd say it isn't supposed to do it. I, also new to the Dynasty 200DX(got it Monday night) noticed that it only pops when I get the tungsten into the puddle. I did it a few times at first, but I'm getting better now.

Also, take HAWKs advice and get some 1/16" 5356 AL filler if you plan on doing AL. I have both 4043 and 5356 and the 5356 works much better for a rookie like me.

I asked alot of these same questions and took the advice of the very knowledgeable people on here and so far I've very happy with my progress.

TIG welding steel seems fairly easy to me. I made a couple practice passes just pushing a molten pool along some angle iron. Then, the next step was to repeat, only this time I added filler as I went. After making a few of these passes I laid 2 pieces next to each other and let it rip. The weld looked decent, especially for my first try. I took it with me to work the next day and put it in the big bench vise and bonked on it with a large hammer. It took quite a few blows before I caused it to fail. The weld cracked near where I started, but quickly went to the base metal and tore away in the base material, leaving the weld intact. I'm sure it failed near where I started because I had insufficient penetration due to starting to move the puddle before I should have.

I'm still learning with every step I take and I'm having fun doing it. Last night I tried my luck with some Aluminum and Stainless. The stainless was slightly harder than the cold rolled, but didn't seem too bad. Aluminum proved to be VERY difficult for me. Since the puddle doesn't change color like it does with steel it is difficult to see when the puddle has formed and is ready to be pushed along. I also notice that I have to feed the filler in as fast as I can to have it even begin to look like a bead. After struggling for quite some time I finally was able to join 2 strips together with a "bead", and I use "bead" loosely here. It was UGLY!!!! But it was strong enough that I couldn't break the weld using 2 pairs of pliers to beat up on the piece.

The best advice I can give, which isn't much since I'm still a rookie, is to take the advice of the guys around here who have been doing this for quite some time, ask questions if you aren't 100% sure on something, and most of all PRACTICE!!!!

The Dynasty does kind of sound like a faint pop at the arc when starting in DC. This is normal. The HF is on and the pop sound is the unit going into start amperage mode for a few milliseconds.

Andy is right. I tried some chrome moly and it does pop on it and mild steel also. I had really forgotten since most of what I have been doing in recent months is aluminum. It also has the snap especially if the stick out is short.

I'd consider my pop more on the distinct side , than faint, and I don't hear the HF start like I hear the HF in AC mode.

Should I be hearing the HF start like you hear it in AC mode?

I would not worry about it. It is much more distinct on DC. I probably would not have noticed it on AC ; except your post brought it to my attention. The high pitched whine mostly overides any HF start pops on the AC.

No. You usually won't hear the HF on DC. These are completely different start settings within the micro-processor for AC and DC.
