  • Miller Welding Expo in Atlanta

    Hey guys and gals:

I attended the Miller Welding Expo in Lawrenceville, GA March 31, 2004. It was great! I met Andy, Sue Feldkamp, and too many other people to remember. You all know "Ask Andy". Sue was promoting the OCC Chopper. I must say these people are fantastic. They give a whole new meaning to southern hospitality! I was treated like a long lost brother by all the people I met. Miller employees are great people.

Just before you enter the building there was a display of Miller's engine driven welders from the Blue Star 140 all the way up to the Big Blue Air Pak. There was a demo booth so anybody who wanted could weld with these machines. The new Pro 300D with the Caterpillar 3013 saw the most use. It has great arc performance and is quiet enough to talk to your buddy even at full throttle! If anybody is looking for a new engine drive, this one is worth a long look.

Once inside the door everybody got a name tag and registration packet. It had a 75 year anniversary OCC Chopper T shirt, 2004 catalog, and some other goodies. You were also entered in a drawing to win door prizes.

The demo room was the next stop. There were numerous ITW (Illinois Tool Works), owns Miller Electric ; Hobart ; Weldcraft ; Bernard; etc., product demonstrations.

Mark, decked out in his Miller Logo Tech Jacket, was showing his TIG skills and helpful hints to beginner and advanced welders alike. He had a booth full of Miller TIG machines including the Syncrowave 250, Dynasty 200DX, Dynasty 300DX Tig Runner Package, and assorted air and water cooled torches.

Ron with Weldcraft certainly knows his torches from the plain 125 #9 aircooled through the super flexible, 225 amp, water cooled, interchangeable head torch package. By the way this is one of Andy's favorite torches.

The Bernard rep had a complete line of the Bernard Mig torches and accessories. I must not forget Hobart. They also had a number fantastic products in the line up. There were also some demonstrations of inductance heating machines and single cell robotic arms.

The demo room exit opened into the warehouse where there were wall to wall used and reconditioned welding machines and plasma cutters to purchase. There was also a nice plasma cutting demo booth with the Miller full line up of PAC equipment available to try.

From there was the Orange County Chopper Display. Sue Feldkamp was playing it up as Brian was snapping digital pictures! He took pictures of all who wanted their picture taken with the chopper. No, I could not resist! There I was standing with the chopper in a now digitized and preserved photo displayed in a nice 4 page color anniversary brochure.

Now for all you race fans: Andy was there with his car. He was running a little tire changing competition. You had to grab the impact wrench (Ingersol Rand of course), spin off the lug nuts, and pull the tire off by its spokes. The fastest time from each group of 4 people won a cool racing winged Miller cap. I got a cap and must confess that begging sometimes goes a long way!!!

I think Sue and the gang cranked up the chopper and it sounded great! However, not to be outdone, Andy fired up the race car and the chopper noise faded away as fast as it came! Way to go A-.

Lunch was catered for all who were hungry. From the looks of the crowded tables that was everybody! On exiting the warehouse a stack of Miller Bobcats(225NT) were stacked 15' high and a hundred yards long. Andy said in time of a disaster, hurricane, storm, etc., these units could all be shipped out in a day or less. They are very handy for power generation in addition to maintenance and repair welding.

Once again I must say Andy, Sue, Brian, Ron, Mark and all the gang treated me like good family. I am very appreciative that they took time from very busy schedules to say hello and make me feel at home. For those of you that missed the trip: Try to make it next time. I had an absolute blast! I have always thought great things about Miller Electric's products. Now I have met firsthand some of the people who make Miller such a fantastic customer oriented company. Yesterday I saw not only great Miller machines, but the true customer satisfaction that goes with those great machines! That my friends is the TRUE POWER OF BLUE!

A special thanks to Andy and Sue! You are the best!

    HAWK or Andy,

I wonder if they're going to have an expo in one of the "**** Yankee" states like maybe Ohio? The IX center in Cleveland is probably big enough. I'd love to go to one of those and see what it's all about. Not to mention getting to meet the moderator of this discussion group and see his handywork.

      Blondie,

I can't say for sure where the show locations will be that Andy is attending. I can tell you he is a fantastic guy full of knowledge, enthusiasm, and is as down home and friendly as a person can be! He certainly made me feel right at home. If you have the chance to meet him in person , don't pass it by. His love for racing and welding shines bright and he very willing to pass it on and help the rest of us.

Well I had you guys in my thoughts. Just could'nt take off work or work would'nt let me take off. Actually had the misses talked into going. It would have cost me. But I think it would have been worth it. Wanted to try out a 200DX. Hopefully next time....

          HAWK,

Thanks for the kind words!! I really enjoyed meeting you and wish more of our forum friends could have made it. Those type of shows are fun to do 'cause I'm not stuck behind the weld bench all day and can get out and talk with people and do our pit stop demos and have time to answer questions. The PRI show(performance racing industry show) is crazy busy and all I do is weld for 3 days straight.

          Blondie,

The only other weld expo that is on the schedule now is down in TX. I think that one is in October??? The other regions have not decided to do any yet. I suspect your area will not because of the AWS show that is there in Chicago this year but you never know. I will be attending the PRI show in Indy this year, maybe you could drop by there and check us out. It's a professional show only but I'm sure I could get you a pass. Also if you are looking for a trip to Vegas, the SEMA show is there in November.

If I hear any more shows on the schedule, I'll put them out here.

          Andy

            Andy,

The Indy show might be doable for me I have a brother who lives in Seymour which is about an hour south so I could stay at his place that weekend.

The SEMA show is something I can only dream about. Maybe if I can ever get things going right to do a custom bike Daytona might be something I'll do but it'll be more or less to let people see what kind of bikes I am capable of building. I'm sure I won't be able to have anything ready for Biketoberfest though. Maybe Bike Week next year? Do you think I could get a spot next to Orange County Choppers?? Nah just a wishful thought, I'd most likely get stuck on the far side of the "Cabbage Patch" which may as well be the "Dark Side of The Moon".

            Someday but not today.

Yea please keep me informed as to any shows that are near my area I'd really love to attend. Oh I'll definitely be entering your pit stop contest. Are you using the "Thunder Gun" on nitrogen like the NASCAR guys?

              Blondie,

Maybe we can hook up at the Indy PRI show. I am giving it serious thought. It has been years, but I walked the track with Unser and some drivers. My great uncle lived in Speedway. I was just a kid, but what fun it was and how great the memories. The track was warm and the noon sun hanging high in the sky.... Another day.

                HAWK,

That would be great. I just have to see how work and finances go. It shouldn't be too expensive for me as I can stay close enough.

                  Bring it on Blondie

We use real pit guns. The thunder gun is a "street" version to look like the guns we use. It goes for around $200. The pit guns we use are $1200 and spin 10000 rpm and have no speed control. Just forward and reverse.

You wouldn't want a spot next to OCC. We paid through the nose (actually through every orifice) for the spot this year. We may not go next year.

                    Andy,

I know I couldn't afford a spot next to OCC that's why I made the pun about being on the far side of the cabbage patch. By the time I'd be able to build the bike and get it to Daytona I'd be so broke that would be all I could afford. But if you don't get them where the people can see them then no one will buy them. So maybe I have to sleep on the bike this time but maybe next time I'll be able to afford an enclosed trailer to sleep in.

I know the thunder guns are replicas of what's used in the NASCAR pits. The thunder guns advertise a 10000 rpm no load speed and if I'm not mistaken a 600 ft pound torque rating in reverse and 425 forward. I think CP makes a 1/2 impact that boasts 1000 ft pound reverse torque spec. With a spec like that the ill tempered nut or bolt had better beware that's move it or break it torque. I saw it in the Federated Auto Parts catalog which I just happen to NOT have handy at the moment.

I've not been part of a 4 tire and 20 gallon 16 second pit stop before but have had to rebuild a Donovan 517 hemi between rounds before. Once or twice wondered if it'd fire at the line because we didn't have time to fire it under the awning, just pull it up to the line and it's go or blow!!

Oh by the way do you have the dates on the PRI show?

The PRI show is in Dec 9-11.

I've seen some of the guns you are talking about. Seems like a great shop unit. The guns we have are rated at 10000 @ 100psi but we crank them up to 160-180 psi. Not sure how fast they spin then but I know if you don't hit the nut just right...it will make it a round nut in a split second

If you are the least bit interested in racing stuff, the PRI show is the largest race show of the year. It will take at leat 2 days to see it all. It's like Disney world for racers!
