The 1 amp per .001" of metal thickness is a starting point for TIG. It is only a guide as the amount of surface area, preheat, thermal insulation, weld configuration, pulse rate, arc frequency, operator technique, travel speed, position of weld, direction of travel, type of shielding gas mix, actual machine you are using, and probably other factors I have forgotten to list affect the amperage setting required to make a particular weld.
