  • Magnetism???

Was tig welding on a rear end housing, miller econotig. Running wide open and noticed the machine will start to make a vibrating noise, which I think is normal, but what seemed odd is sometimes as I started to introduce filler, the housing had magnatism and pulled the filler rod to it. Maybe bad ground?

Thanks Andy and others for all the helpfull information on this site.

    Good question.

Your ground was probably fine. The chance of magnetizing the work is common when running at higher amps. You may have to demagnetize it or try running your ground clamp on one side for awhile then the other side. Or put the clamp as close to your weld area. You can also run AC directly through the part with your stick stinger on one side and the ground clamp on the other side. Turn your unit way down on amps and step on the foot pedal for a short time. This should degauss the part.

    Hope this helps.

Makes sense Andy, I had my ground clamp on the opposite end to where I was welding.

Yea bud...all you did was build a big electro-magnet

        That happens.

        Have fun
