Liners????

Bought a .023 liner to replace the .030 on the MM172 today.

The Miller saleman kept assuring me it was not necessay and the oversized liner (.030) would work fine with the .023 wire.
Also have read on this site the same info.

Then why does Miller make and stress to use the proper liner.

If I AM GOING TO INVEST THOUSANDS, WHICH I HAVE ALREADY WITH MILLER, I AM NOT ABOUT TO THROW A WRENCH IN THE WORKS BY NOT INSTALLING A LOUSY $17.00 LINER PRODUCE POSSIBLY POOR WELDS. I HAVE ENOUGH TECH TROUBLES ALREADY.


ANDY OR SOMEONE. LET'S GET THIS STRAIGHT PLEASE::::

Liners must be a Louisiana thing. I asked the same question awhile ago and Andy's answer was a definite yes about matching liner to wire.
I have used Mig off and on for about ten years so I am not even an amateur yet.

I have come to respect the opinions and answers I see on this board. Even though my MM175 owners manual says the liner it comes with is OK for .024 wire I am going to follow Andy's advice and get a liner to match. I plan to do alot of thin stuff. Historically I have enough trouble with burnthrough, etc., so I need all the help I can get.

The quick answer is yes the bigger liner will work. The right answer is, if you want it to work better and have more consistant starts and better feeds when the gun isn't perfectly straight, then put the correct liner per wire size. The wire will not snake around as much in the correct size liner. And if you do a bunch of tack welds on body panels, you will like the smaller liner.

I have different guns set up for different wires. This way I don't have to keep pullin the liner out and changing it. This may not be feasable for everyone but I can FEEL the difference in the wire going through the gun with the proper liner.

It's a small price to pay for better performance. Believe me..If I could do it cheaper, I DO it cheaper and this is an area that I don't skimp on.

Have to agree with Andy on that..one way to look at it is yes the smaller wire will feed.But the smaller wire also has a bigger area in side the liner to move around.That some times causes flat spots on the wire then when it passes through the tip it sometimes drags causing the wire to burn backwards towards the tip and then ..it can cause the ole bird nest it the drive rollers.(im sure we have all had that once or twice).
