98-2 and 95-5 are the most common for steels with 98-2 working for both steel and SS. Argon only for Alum. The gas recommendation will be in the optima. Go online and look up the optima control manual. The pulse programs are listed there.

    Have fun

    Hi Andy,
Thank you for the responce. The optima i believe is around 5-6 yrs old..But has very little use.It was owned by a gentlemen that past away. His wife had sold the XMT,and the guy didnt want the Optima. So she offered it to me at a very reasonable price.Around 10 yrs ago i worked for General Dynamics On the M1A1 Army Tank Project as a Welder and i used pulse on some applications i think we used 98-2 gas but its been to long ago to remember....so what gas do you recomend?.

The XMT 304/Optima is great. The optima has preprogrammed settings for different material and thicknesses. It also has a setting called MMP- Manual Mig Pulser. You can input all the variables yourself. Within each program, you can change variables to suit your needs. In otherwords, you may like a shorter arc length or you can dial in a hotter setting. It really is user friendly. How old in the Optima??
