  • Miller Bobcat 250 Fine Tune

I recently picked up a bobcat 250 and i was wondering the best fine tune settings for 1/8 7018. I I bought a 5Lb box of hobart 7018 (which i personally cant stand but thats all they had when i was trying out) Im having a hard time dialing this machine in or for the rod to burn smooth, they run kind of poppy but the weld bead looks good. With my experience im guessing its the rods, But this is my first engine driven experience so I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue with their bobcat or what they run the fine tune on? I keep mine between 7-10.

Tomorrow im gonna pick up a sealed box of excaliburs and see how they run.

My personal welder is Big 40 D. But I do work for two different company's that hv Bobcats on site and I will frequently use there welders on small repairs. My range is 5-7 area. But sometimes on vert up I will put course setting in high or 3rd setting and run on low side for fine setting 2-3 area. Just depends on conditions and weld required.
Also if stick welding 7018 I only use Lincoln Excalibur, my opinion that's the best.
Don't be afraid to try different settings, all welders are different and trial & error will fine tune the best & worst of them.

Thank you, I agree with the excaliburs, best rod IMO. Im currently in the process of building a trailer for the welder which is all done, will mount tomorrow and bring home so i can learn more about the machine settings. I'm a submarine welder and we were equipped with totally different machines than engine drives. The bobcat so far does weld good and I enjoy it. Once I get everything tuned to my standards i plan on using it to test with very soon, i just want to find that "sweet spot" on the machine first.
