  • switching power source on a Miller dynasty 280 dx

is the variable source of power that can be used with this new machine (208-575 V , 1 or 3 phase) something that is "selected" via a switch, or is it in the changing of the hard wiring inside the unit??

second question ..is the dynasty 350 also a DX model?

up to the 350 unit, they offer a regular version and a DX version....but on the dynasty 350, they only list the one unit.

    thanks

All of the Dynasty machines have "Autoline" ...
it will sense voltage and phase.. then switch accordingly...

    Auto-Line Power Management Technology
Allows hookup to either single-phase or three-phase electrical input from 208-575 V with no manual linking, providing convenience in any job setting. An ideal solution for dirty or unreliable input power.

Both Dynasty 350 and 700 are fully featured machines although MILLER never seemed to use the DX designation

Yeah I read that, but the terminology "no manual linking" is foreign to me.

so does the consumer have to fit the machine with a plug??

I was thinking once it has a certain plug on it...its not going into a different receptacle... so was a little unsure how that would play out...

      thanks

At least on the DYNASTY 200 and 350 that I bought several years ago... they come with bare pigtail ready to connect the plug of your choice and phase... (or directly wired to breaker box)
All leads are used fo 3ph... and you omit the RED one for single ph...

BTW... older machines like your Dialarc HF have brass link that must be connected and configured to match your input voltage.. thus... "manual linking"

See page #9 Section 3-10.. Connecting Input Power-Positioning jumper links..

If you are looking to use one for both 120 & 240 single phase... here is the info for that..
          (DYN 200 only)

It will sense the input voltage and adjust itself:
Put a 120v plug on it and plug into 120v power… it senses 120v power
240v Single phase… it then changes to 240v input power

Install a 3-phase plug, connect to 3-phase power and it does the same thing.

Only thing you gotta do manually is install the plug of choice for your input power.

              neat machine!!!!!!!!!!

one of the best benefits will be rolling it just about anywhere in the company and just plugging it in where I can....

right now the Dial arc is sitting next to the 50 amp sub panel....with a 3" dia plug on the end of its wire!!

              thanks

If I was dragging the machine around I would just make adapter pigtails for different input voltages

The power available in your shop/plant and electrical codes will dictate which connectors should be used... you should consult with your electrician to make sure you meet code in an industrial setting...

However for single phase 240vac the NEMA 6-50 has pretty much become the defacto standard.... with many using adapter pigtails to connect to various connectors that we might encounter off of our own site... the DYN 200 is often used with pigtails that adapt 6-50 to dryer/range...
RV & Marine "Shore Power" and common 120vac three prong (5-15)....
Output will be limited by the safe current draw available...
Safety and common sense should prevail...

switching power source on a Miller dynasty 280 dx

If you don't want to take the time to make your own pig tails, a good source for that sort of thing locally would an RV supply. They stock all sorts of whatsits for adapting various plugs to this and that.

once I get the machine Ill have the electrician wire it for a plug in my room. Then I ll tell him to check out and acquire maybe two other plugs that are the most common through the building... in case there is a repair needed outside the toolroom. We have never had the capability to be mobile with the welder. I will leave it up to the safety director and maintenance to figure out what code and needs are through out the rest of the building.

They are NOT going to have any adapter for this application that will be useful.

They only carry adapters for RV connections (some may overlap but this isn't one of them)

Your RV comes with either a 14-50 or a TT-30 (120v) type of plug.

Not common in a shop/plant setting.

You can find most of the Connectors at a box store minus the 3-phase connectors.

The 280DX and I believe similar models use the black, and white as HOT L1 & L2. Green is equipment ground. For three phase, use also Red as L3. Auto line selects the voltage provided.

One significant advantage is its ability to compensate for voltage loss with long supply conductors.

If you say so. I found plenty of useful pigtails by complete accident at the local RV store. All sorts of molded in rubber adapters for different configured 230v plugs to each other and then the same plugs to 115v.

I am going to put in a PO to the boss for the Dynasty 350..and after talking with the safety guy we think that the 230 plug we will use in the shop will be common enough around the plant, that we wont have to change a thing!!..I bet it would be a rare event if I do roll the welder out to the plant floor to fix something...but I love the option!

the dial arc is plugged into a 250 volts subpanel drop down receptacle...rated for 50 amps

that line will be the same one we will use on the new welder, just a smaller plug I guess..

                              thanks
