  • Spoolmatic 30A spool gun to Lincoln 256 mig welde.

Hi everybody, Im new to the forum.
Let me tell you little about my problem. I do some side jobs after work at home so I just got me an use Lincoln 256. Im using it to weld some 1/4" to 3/8" stainless plate but now somebody want me to weld some aluminum plate.I been looking to buy a spool gun but they are to expensive for my right now. I have a Spoolmatic 30A spool gun at work that works great and we dont use any more. I been searching and reading a lot about using the Spoolmatic 30A with my Lincoln 256 and I think is possible.
-My first question is how many voltage does the Miller Spoolmatic 30A and the Lincoln magnum 250LX run?. I know they are different.
-My second question is if Miller or Lincoln or somebody sell some kind of adapter to use the Spoolmatic 30A with my Lincoln 256. Something just plug and play nothing to complicated to install.
Hope somebody knows about an adapter for me to use.
    Thank you in advance.

Yes, cruizer on here knows how to make an adaptor cord. Hopefully he will chime in. Its not hard.

The linc already has a built in spool gun module, so you don't need the wc24, after that is removing the 10 pin on the 30 A and sticking on a 7 pin, no real problem

Hi cruizer, thank you for your help. Thats what I was thinking at first, just buy some kind of adapter to go from the 30A spool gun connector to the Lincoln 256 connector. I went to my local welding supply and I asked them if Miller or Lincoln sell some kind of adapter for what I was trying to do but they told me Miller guns and Lincoln guns runs on different voltage.
Tomorrow if I get a chance I try to check the voltage coming out the pins on my Lincoln 256 and the Miller we have at work . I try to find out pin out diagrams to know which are the right pins I need.
By any chance do you know what voltage the two guns runs.

Thank you for all you help.

                  I found out that:
Lincoln Magnum 250XL spool gun runs on 24 VDC.
Miller Spoolmatic 30A with WC-24 control box runs on 24 VAC and with out the WC-24 control box runs on 115 VAC.
I check the Miller Machine at work (Shopmaster 300) thats the machine we plug the gun when we need it . I check pin A and B and it reads about 25 VAC I try to read the voltage on my Lincoln 256 but I couldnt read anything, The mutimeter I was using was AC only.
Monday I take my meter from home and I check to see if it has the 24 VDC.
So has anybody has run the Spoolmatic 30A on a Lincoln 256 or similar Lincoln welder and can tell me what I need to make it work.

                  Thank you.

Hi cruizer do you have any adapter for sale 10 pin to 7 pin. I like to keep the 10 pin connector on the gun that way I can use it on the Miller welders at work if I ever need it and when I need it a can use it on my Lincoln.

                    Thank you.

Well no, the spool guns be it a miller or linc run in at 0-36 VDC. We are talking AFTER the controller. Since we are not using a wc24 ( which is 24vac). And merely using the linc controller, all we have to do is mod the connector from the 10 pin on the spool gun to the 7 pin on the Lincoln. Any repair shop in your neighbourhood can make this. Now I usually just cut off the 10 pin and stick a 7 pin on it. Saves room in the Lincoln. It's pretty self explanatory when you line up the 2 diagrams, a few line switches, and 10 min later off you go.

Ok thank you. I already got the pinout/wiring diagram from both 30A spool gun and the Amphenol connector from the 256 welder. It looks really simple to make the adapter. I try to get the order the connector this weekend online and Im going to make the adapter long enough so the connector for the spool gun is outside the welder and not inside that way I have pleanty of room inside.
Again thank you for all your help, and I let you know later how things come out.

Hi cruizer, finally I got my connectors last week and today I finish the adapter,The first try was wrong the motor in the gun was turning the wrong direction and the wire speed too. So I just switch the wires and now it works perfect.
Now to try do some aluminum welding. I havent use a spool gun in long time, more than 7 years.
Not sure how think material can I weld with my Lincoln 256.
Thank you for all the help.

Would the the same apply for a Lincoln 216? The 216 has a 4 pin connector on it. Could I make a patch cable from 4 Lincoln to 10 Miller? I have a 216 and for whatever reason the Miller spoolguns seem to pop up second hand way more often and more affordably. The entry level Lincoln spool guns seem to be very cheaply made.

                            Thanks
