  • Some advice on using the multimatic 200 to weld some 3/4 tube to 3/4 plate

So I want to put together a small but heavy duty metal brake for my shop press, I had some metal laying around and picked up a bit more to use and play around with to do this project.

I have the multimatic 200 setup, I have everything I need to tig, mig or stick for this project. Just need advice on which method to start with on this..

I do have access to both 120 and 230 connections in my garage.

In the past ive only welded thin 16g and 18g sheet metal for my car project, but this is something I haven't done since highschool shop class and that was all done with stick welder.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'd better bump this thread to someone else. Suffice to say your going to have to V out the part, make multiple passes with 1/8" rod.

You know after posting and researching some more, I noticed that what I have would not do the work.. which sucks. but I found a few videos showing that exact method.

Ill have to do more research, but if anyone else can offer advice and/or suggestions, it would be great..

Something to clarify as well.. that the tube is 3/4 ID, and only about 1/8 thick.
Now I do also have 3/4 rod that I would like to weld to 3/4 plate.

If that is possible with the multimatic 200 with multiple passes? I would think I can do the 1/8 tube to the 3/4 plate but the 3/4 rod to 3/4 plate is what im trying to determine.

You should be able to do it with 7018 3/32rod moth multiple passes or even 1/8in rod also. Otherwise clean it up good and you can do it with tig and a bunch of passes. Not sure how much welding it will take but your duty cycle will be the biggest hindering fact I would think. Someone more knowledgeable than I may disagree though.

Pre heat if using wire or even sticks if it is cold out.

Wow...so much responses...for such a simple job. Grind the mill scale off both pieces, v the edge of the 3/4 rod, turn up the heat and weld away. Hardly a difficult job, seeing how you will have less than a minute of welding your multimatic will be fine. This is is not a space ship.
