    Welding 1" pipe to edge of 10 guage steel plate

    I'm repairing my sailboat rail. The rail is about 6" tall and wraps around the perimeter of the boat. I would like to weld a 1" pipe to the top of the rail. A friend suggested I cut a slot in the pipe then push it over the rail. I'm worried the rail inside of the pipe will start to rust. Would it be possible to weld the pipe to the top edge of the rail without cutting a slot. I was thinking of welding the pipe on alternate sides every 6 or 8 inches, but I'm not sure about the strength. My front sail is attached to a track that I must mount on top of the pipe rail cap.
    I'd sure appreciate any advice

      Surely it's stainless steel. I have very little experience working on boats, outside of fabbing a doohickey here and there. What about just replacing the old top rail with a new one? How about some pictures, that help those with experience in this five you better advise.

          I haven't decided on stainless or mild steel
          i want to replace the wooden rail with steel, because the wood tends to stay wet; and causes the metal to rust.

            from your pics... it looks like a STEEL hulled boat...

            could you give us more info on size... make and model...??

            first guess... I would use 304 stainless tube and MIG it with self shielding Stainless Steel fluxcore... (no slotting.. just lay it on top)... but really need more info....

            was this a "rubrail"..??.. if so... SS will save on paint and maint in the long term..

            BTW... my last sailboat was a Morgan 416 OI..... fiberglass hull with stainless rails..

              You could probably save a lot of money by welding carbon steel bar to that rusty rail instead. Would be more robust than thin wall pipe too.

                Yep she's a steel hull Ted Brewer godriche 37 1981. I've been working on it for almost 2 years. Almost ready.
                should I weld it solid or just weld it on alternating sides every 6 inches or so?

                  I've got most of the rust treated and primed. It looks like the rail is rusty, but it's a product called wr9 steel seal. The brown area in the photo is a plate I welded in.
                  regular old mild steel would be cheaper, and I'm still considering it. But ss would look nice
