  • Question on MIG 211 Wire Feed Speed Calculation

I am new to welding, so I have been looking a numerous youtube videos, etc.
I found information that one could measure the inches/minute feed by timing for 6 seconds, measuring the wire output, adding a "0" and that would be the approximate IPM at the dial setting of the machine.
I have a Miller 211 AutoMig. Looking at the chart on the machine for 1/8" stock it indicates a setting of 65 feed and 4.5. I ran the wire for 6 seconds and came up with 350 IPM.
Now, the youtube charts indicate for 0.030 wire, 1/8" metal, the IPM should be about 240.
I also tried again using the Auto Set for 0.030 wire and 1/8" on the dial and again came up with about 350 IPM.
    What am I doing wrong?

In my opinion, just use the door chart and weld happy until you have a need for measuring WFS

The door charts are generally very close - try it and see how it welds - adjust from there. On my millermatic 210 I generally have to turn down the wire speed slightly on thin steel due to the chart being made for 230 volts input and my actual input voltage is 245v.

Btw, not all machines output the wire at the same speed when not welding - so counting and measuring won't always work for every machine.

        MM211 HAS "SMOOTH START"

starts slowly then speeds up- might throw your numbers off

Forget the numbers. Turn machine on and follow chart and go from there. OR , set on auto set for correct wire size, and increase it until feels and welds right.

Thanks for the feedback on my post

I will experiment with settings until I get some that are (seem) correct. I have cut a few welds and put navel jelly on them to check penetration, to see if the weld looked fair. (Weldmonger video).
            Again, Thanks Guys!
