  • New to welding (Intro)

    Hello Miller Family,

I pulled the trigger after alot of thought and reflection and purchased a Millermatic 211. I was debating on a cheap harbor freight mig, or deciding against needing a machine at all, and finally going all the way to the other end of the spectrum and researched a reputable "life" machine. Im a tool junkie, and over the years Ive learned that I keep and use tools for the long run, so I buy to the best of my ability.

The journey that got me here...
I kayak fish, mainly down a remote 60 miles of undeveloped beach, Padre Island National Seashore. This has always been my "hobby" and my truck has done well to get me to and back each adventure. BUT, last year I got a sailing kayak, and the additional gear to take became quite the burden on the small truck. So, I started researching custom trailers, hoping to buy something that I could use to get my gear down the beach. Finally it was clear that I would need to build my own... Since I only have experience in wood work...Id have to first learn to weld. Pretty simple, eh.

Thus far, Ive read all the manuals, watched plenty of videos, and bought all the other stuff Id need to get up and running. I hope to get the system set up next week, and begin practicing on some work related simple projects. I run a seafood wholesale and we just moved into a new space, so first project will be welding steel tube bumpers around the Freezer walls. I made sure to get a 230V outlet installed in my "shop" area of the new warehouse.

Im sure Ill have questions along the way, so I figured, I better do the courteous thing and introduce myself first!

    Hello all, I am a new miller junkie...and i haven't even laid a single bead...yet!

    Welcome to the forum!

I have the similar beliefs when it comes to tools, or anything for that matter. If you plan on having something for a long time, buy the best you can afford! Going cheap will usually come back to haunt you in the long run.

Miller welders are sound investments. Harbor freight welders don't exactly suggest quality, IMHO.

I have a 211, and I enjoy using it. I think you bought a very nice machine.

    Enjoy,

    Steve

          Thanks guys

          Thanks guys,

Yeah the 211, I really couldn't afford it, well i could and I did, but then a week later found out my wife was pregnant! Its a little over a year now since I made the purchase, and with a healthy boy getting chunkier by the day, its finally time to get back on track with the project.

Regarding weldingtipsandtricks, I've seen every video regarding MIG from him. A friend recommended his youtube channel, and I've had plenty of time to do my research over the last year.
