Chipping Slag
One of my welding instructors took a short sawzall blade and put a small handle on it and used it to remove his slag....just scraped his toe lines and it popped right off....but he was a **** of a stick welder and always had the machine set right and it peeled off in one piece most of the time

7018 will peel itself for you if your mochine is set right. 6013 is really easy just a few seconds later. 6010 & 11 just a bit longer sometimes. A 2 3/4 cup brush or a twisted knot wire wheel are you friends at any rate.

As long as the molten metal has solidified it can be cleaned. Sometimes it does clean easier if you wait a few seconds for it to cool a bit more.

Chipping Slag
Hello,
How long should I wait to chip the slag after putting down a bead? Say using 6010, 6013. Is it better to wait until the metal cools? Can the bead be damaged if slag is removed too soon after welding?
