  • 1 amp per .001"??????????

    If this is correct then 1/4 inch steel (.250") would require 250 amps if I figuring this right. This is too much isn't it????

    You are in the ball park. Start in that area and if it's too hot drop off. It really depends on your machine, speed of travel, tungsten stickout, tungsten type, gas type, gas flow, etc. Just find the right combo that works for you.

      Your joint design and prep along with how many passes you intend to do and whether you preheat or not will also determine total amperage.
