Miller 225G Pus

Help! I just got a Miller 225G set up for A pto application, I hooked it up to a 18 horse v twin and fired it up. With only 235 hours I expected it to work fine but to my dismay nothing. I was told a friends 225g rotated clockwise from engine looking forward mine is also, checked fuse F1 and F2 both good. Cleaned up rings that the brushes ride on and both brushes show good from tip to wire end no power to either. Where do I go from here? There is no battery I just jumped the starter to get it going, there are three wires already out of the machine to hook to a starter of a motor. Is this the problem do I have to have 12v to excite the system? Any input would be great, the machine is very clean and looks new, a little dusty but I use welders at work that look like frankenstien compared to this one. Looked at most connections and can find no bad wires corrosion or burnt spots. Thanks

Not exactly sure what you are doing, however the unit depends on the battery for all functions. Jumping ANY Miller is simply bad news though,

Why, Cruizer? What damage have I maybe already done (standard Bobcat 225G/16hp Onan)? Is jumping a no-no for other popular machines (i.e. Ranger 9/Onan)?

The Bobcat is not totally isolated from to jump starts, as a surge will takeout its exciter diode in short order. All other Miller engine driven welders are NOT protected. So, you go and boost them $$$ power or voltage boards will get detroyed imediately.

The First couple years on the Lincoln 305 with the battery board will blow on a surge. The Ranger 8 was isolated from the battery, as are all other Lincs as far as I know.

PTO miller

This miller welder had no motor connected to it I simply used a love joy coupler to couple engine I had to machine absolutely no wiring was run to machine from motor. Picture a log splitter motor coupled to a pump with a coupler. just needed something to drive the machine, but if the miller needs the 12 to function then the problem probably lies there. This machine was driven off of a weld truck pto, there are three wires to connect to a 12v system for starter but they where not in use. But I will have to check fuses diodes again just in case. just didnt realize the battery had anything to do with powering the system thought it came from brushes and windings. I do not know a whole lot about working on these just have welded with them,

I will hook up the battery and wire it properly tomorrow and test some things again. Hopefully the 12v will be the key I just didnt understand the system relied on it so much from the battery. I do not know how the had it powered in the service truck application.

Me again still trying to figure this machine out. Should you have continuity between positive and ground leads or is the windings burnt

Frig me, the welder gen windings have zero to do with the battery, Bat charges off a engine mounted voltage regulator. and only supplys excitation power to get the ball rolling welding wise. Maybe get a electronics guy over to explain how the unit works

Maybe you misunderstood the question I simply asked if the welding leads should have continuity between the two. I understand that the battery has nothing to do with the windings. Im trying two work through the electric side of the machine. It was a whole different question, some people that ask people on here do not have help thats why we ask people that know(meaning you) and we thank you for the advice. As for the Frig me of you comment not everyone knows as much as you we are trying to get by, If Im annoying you in any way sorry! but feel free not to answer if thats the case.

I got it working YAY! The problem was in the switches for current adj. not making proper contact cleaned them up went righT to work awesome. Thank you cruizer for your imput.
