  • Older XMT 304

I bought an XMT 304 from NASA which they said it was repairable. When I received it, it had a danger tag on it and I tried to contact them to see what was the issue and get it repaired. Long story short, I never got my answer so ... I decided to plug it in and see if it would give some sort of indication as to what was wrong. Prior to this I replaced the cord and matched the colors to the machine. Obviously the cord had been replaced once before but I matched the colors anyway. I wired it with a four prong plug and plugged it in. To my surprise it came to life and didn't show any issues; I even set up a TIG torch to it and it seemed just fine, even though my knowledge of welding is extremely limited. Now mind you it was wired for four prongs - So I decided to take it to a shop where I know some professional welders are at and wanted to get their opinion of it and see if maybe there was something wrong with it. Where I took it require a three prong plug and not a four. I wired it like I have been told - to leave the red leg out and when I plugged it in, it didn't do anything. Nothing, not even a sign of it getting power. Could there be something wrong with the machine, even though it seems to work at my home on a four prong plug? I've also removed the cover and noticed that the wiring to the on/off switch does not match the wiring to the plug, would this matter?
    Thanks

4 pin plug would be wired for 3 phase..3 pin plug would be wired for single phase. I assume you have 3 phase at your shop? So at your shop wire it for single phase and see if it works. Lot of variables here..ie wrong voltage, wrong wiring...it also could be an issue with the autolink, but if it works at your shop then why care?!!!

      Doublecheck input wiring and voltage...

You might be well served to get the owners manual and confirming that the input wiring is correct..

Very easy to do... just enter your serial number here and it will match the correct version of the manual..

a little bit of caution here might save you a lot of heartache...
