  • Bead doesnt want to connect

    I am quite new to welding and am using a garbage harbor freight stick welder. Those are the first two problems. Also sticking galvanized to a steel of unknown nature. (from a weight bench) I understand that galvanized can be a pain in the cuss w/o the Erector equipment. Anyhoo I am having this problem on something other than galvanized as well. The weld gets both sides but doesn't want to connect as if it is getting pushed out. I turned the amperage up ( it's only a switch) and had better results but still not consist ant. I think I am not letting the pool sit long enough and have the arc out to far and move it to quickly. I am using 7014 1\16 sticks. Also I bought an old airco 200 amp with a spoolmatic2 gun, It's still at work I only got to play with it for about 10 min but all I was able to accomplish was splatter. It was instantly blowing the weld all over. With the bosses equipment I was able to lay pretty **** good beads first time I ever touched a wirefeed so I know it's at least only part me.

    You have to grind off the galvenized material. Wear a good mask, as its rather poisonous

      Buy some 6011 electrodes. They will do better with the plated stuff. You will still need to improve your technique but it might be easier with 6011.

        Sign up for a night class at the local tech college, even if you only have time to take a week or two of "brush-up," and get a pro to look over your shoulder.

          Are you closing up a tube or something? If it is the last weld, the hot air from inside the tube will expand out the hole if there is not vent and is hard to close.

            Not closing a tube but making a collapsible shop crane setup for my garage. A lot of it is my technique, every day work on my welds I can see how much better they are than the prior. I have found that the galvanized welds to itself a **** of a lot better that other steel.

              What will you be picking up with this "shop crane" made of unknown material?

                With your current skill level, you might be better off building a trailer than a shop crane. Just do a search on a newb building a trailer.
                Seriously, reconsider what you are doing, as lives may depend on your welds in this situation.

                  Picking up my motorcycle so as to bring it over the fresh engine and therefore eliminate 90% of the troubles of installing. I suppose its not so much of a shop crane as it is a small lift. I coulda had one of the real shop cranes from the yard at work but the foundation on the house aint thick enough to hold it. I plan on well knowing the structural integrity of my project long before putting it to its designed use.

                    The lift frame came out awesome, the welds are ugly but it's function is great. I used it to remove my new to me welding machine from my truck. An airco 2DCR S224 with a Miller Spoolmatic II on it.

                        To lift a motorcycle? Please indulge us with a picture , as I fear you might have built a liability of a lift. What type of bike are we talking about by the way.

                          I will take a picture when I do it, I need to rebuild the engine first. I will be lifting it without the motor so it will weigh less than the welding machine does. It's a Honda Magna with a V4 in it. I have 2, an 82 and an 85.
