Unless they don't know either or they are low balling to get work.

If you work in a welding shop you should have a good feel for how long stuff takes.

My advice would be to figure out how much time you think it will take & multiply it by an hourly rate. With a few phone calls you can easily find out what labor rates are of welding shops/welders in your area. You will learn quickly if you are under quoting or not.

Dont forget to factor in your license, bond, and insurance, which you have because they are required for doing work in the great state of California.

I usually charge between 50 and 75 bucks an hour plus materials depending on how involved the job is. Even if I only use some of the material such as a half sheet of metal, the customer pays the cost of the whole thing. If the material is being supplied by the customer I figure out about how long it should take me and charge for my time. If you get enough work you will start to get a feel for how much to charge. You have a skill that not a lot of people have so you have to take that into account even if the price seems a little high for the job. Don't let anyone bully you down on your price. If you go down a little it's ok but you don't want to screw your self just to get the job. As you do more work you will get a feel for what price is fair to both the customer and you.
