  • Miller 330st (s) aircraft AC/DC over kill for welding/hobby shop?

so I found I guy selling a miller 330st that's low hrs! I mean like 13hrs is the meter was original. So my question is, is it to big for what Iam looking for? Iam looking for is something to tig/stick an possible mig with an nothing really bigger than 1/2 steel! I do have full 220 power to my shop with a current 50amp plug. But, I can wire in a bigger plug if need be! It comes with just the machine an the tig pedal. The guy says he'll take $700 for it.

No such thing as overkill when it comes to tig aluminum - 200-230 amps is where I run about half of the time on aluminum.

    I use a 1967 Airco branded Miller 330 abp and it's 900lbs of awesome

It also goes down to 5 amps so it's nice on thin steel too.

50amp breaker might not allow the machine to turnon without tripping that breaker. Espically if it has power correction on it. At full power that unit pulls over 100amps. There is a reason old transformer tig welders are so cheap.

        800 pounds

Just remember that they weigh something like 800 pounds. No, I am not kidding. You and your buddy will not be able to pick it up and put it in the back of his pickup.

Not sure whether or not it would run on a 50 amp breaker, even at partial power. My guess is that it would run at low power, but not if you turn it up. It probably draws more than 100 amps at full power.

People love them as welders, but something smaller may be more practical.

Do u have any suggestions on what would be a better alternative to the Miller 330st? Iam starting to get into some aluminum welding jobs an need something better than a spoolgun! I thought on the 330 was cause its cheap an get me started/ setup. Any ideas I would gladly take!

I dont think its over kill, The price is right at $ 700.00.

A 250 amp synchrowave will will draw 104 amps single phase at 230 volts, In fact you will want to wire the machine into a disconnect on the wall, A single phase plug rated over a 100 amps will run several hundred dollars.

its almost a good deal to not pass up on! but I don't want to buy it an not be satisfied with it once I get it home an hooked up! does anyone have any idea how the 330 welds on stainless an aluminum? I prolly do a throw box with/or without fuses then to a full100 breaker in panel. but info on the 330st welding aluminum an stainless.

I run my big Airco (power factor corrected miller 330 abp) on a 60 amp circuit and tig with it for extended periods at 230 amps AC.
