  • Carbon Arc Gouging with dynasty 700

I just ordered a CAC setup for my dynasty 700. I've been doing some reading on this and it seems there are a lot of people that suggest that CAC is rough on a machine, especially an inverter machine. I called miller and they say it is fine...there are 2 settings to change in the advance feature menu, but other than that it is ready to go. They also said that some earlier inverter machines didn't handle CAC very well, but the 700 is up to the task.

    What are your thoughts?

Since I bought my Hypertherm powermax 85 and my LWS made me buy extra cable with gouge gun I only use CAC when I'm in the field.
    Unplug & plug your working.
Faster, quieter, cheaper, less grinding to prep. Also works better to wash off large welds and very adjustable for fine work.
If I can get to it with plasma I never chose CAC anymore. Sooo glad for LWS advise in this area.
Bty. There's days I'll gouge and or wash for 3-4 hrs. Dreaded that with CAC let alone buying rods.

Just never take that machine past 75% on the dial, as you want the computer to take over, cranked to max, and it gets confused. Damage will result.

Unless its aluminum, I would take a cac over a plasma any day. When i cac a needle scaler is all which is needed for cleanup, sometimes a wire brush is all. My biggest probelm with plasma was the size of the torch, heat it generated...ie feels like hands will be burned off, and its slower than cac.
Also i would not worry about hurting that dynasty. With 700 amps on tap, one would really have to work that machine to get to duty cycle, fyi cruizer is right keep it under 75 percent, fyi, 3/16 carbons like 250 amps, 1/4 275-300. Dont forget you will need a good supply of air, any carbon torch ie k3000, k4000 likes 20 plus cfm of air flow, i have two(k2000, k4000) the smaller k2000 does well with 1/4 below carbons. Also it runs great on a 13 cfm compressor, and dont crank the air pressure 90 psi is perfect, no reason to throw sparks farther. Also keep in mind the sparks flow with the curve of the object, if it curves towards you, it will throw it in your face.

Very little to no cleanup with plasma and like wise with CAC if done correct.
Was talking about carbon deposit, I always grind both CAC and plasma just don't want to take any chance on critical welds.
I work a lot with 4130 heat treated and was taught to always remove any trace or chance of carbon. Also was told that plasma has less carbon deposit left. But I'm not a chemist and don't want to be. Just try to learn and do best job I can.
          Good luck & God Bless
